Spiny Eel Versus Bichir?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the great information everyone. I would enjoy a "rarer" species, but honestly I'm not looking to spend a lot of money on whatever I decide to get. My husband doesn't even know that we are getting a Bichir yet, and if I had to pay shipping, that would automatically put it out of the price range! Thank you so much for offering though, I do love the more exotic Poly's.

I'm going to shop around, and maybe ask if different stores can order different species. I like the ropefish idea (I know not exactly a Poly, but they are always grouped together.)

Can you really keep multiple species together, i.e. 2x senegals and 2-3 ropefish, or If I could find a different species like a delhezi, could I keep a delhezi and a senegal without many problems. I plan on putting a lot of driftwood in the tank, but the foot print seems rather small.

Looking forward to advice from people who have done it. I've read really conflicting information online.

Oh, and regarding the eels. I already have a moray eel in one of my tanks, that's enough shy-ness and hunger strikes to last me a life-time!

I had kept an ornate together with senegal for approximately 2 years, never had any issues, the ornate was much bigger also.

On a side note about the eels, I have eels too, and find Gymnothorax tile to be pretty outgoing and curious even with the lights on

polys cohabitate very well, i got 9 in my main tank from 8-17'' and 7 6''ers and 4 ropefish in my growout tank.

I purchased 2 senegal bichirs yesterday. I went to two petsmarts, to compare the stock. At the first PM, there was a striped peacock eel that was still alive, but being picked on by some tiger barbs (I hate tiger barbs...) Anyway, my husband saw it and just couldn't stop looking at it, feeling sorry for it. I told him we could bring it home if he wanted to, and try to nurse it back to health, he said no, and told the woman that worked there. We left to go to another petsmart, bought one of them at the second PM, dropped him off at home, and drove back to the first PM.

By the time we got back, the injured Peacock was no where to be found, I guess she took him out and threw him away :( Now I feel terrible for not at least asking if we could take him...I just hate paying for a fish who's almost dead and it's the store's fault.

Here are some pictures I just took of them.
The top pic is of Bert, and the bottom two are of Ernie. Ernie is a little darker and smaller than Bert. I've put in some frozen krill (small pieces) and I'm hoping to get to see them eat :)

Still kind of wish I had gotten that poor Peacock eel. At least it would have had a change to live out its days in dignity :(
