Sponge filter material?

Don't use the green foam from Joanne's Fabric - no bueno (it has anti-mold stuff).

I actually gave up on making DIY sponges because well-made commercial ones are just so inexpensive and efficient to use.

I bought a whole bunch of used ones at a fish club auction...and some more when I local fish store was closing...

Hello; I got some white open cell foam at Wal-Mart a year or so ago. It was in the craft/sewing section and is commonly used for chair cushion padding. I cut a couple of shapes out and center holes. I had some very old sponge filter bases from many years ago and used one. i ahve had this in a QT for around a year now and it has worked out well. I should have the package around if anyone is interested.

I still don't get why you prefer the simple sponge filter. The links I sent you both have the water sucked up through the sponge, essentially the same effect as a sponge filter. They also have a place to house biological filtration.

This is also a good option for a DIY filter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rj1Glx5anfM
