I have just changed over my breeding system into sponges, XY-380's x 4 in my 6fter and 2 in my 4fter all of one solid air pump
I am assuming i can run them side by side with my current filtration for a month and them remove the internal and canisters leaving just sponges, a heater and lights and nothing else
Hopefully cut down the electricity bill a bit
They are supposed to be good for 60-95 gal each so biologically should very easily deal with the bio load
The reason i have so many is so i have a spare seeded for any extra grow out or quarantine tank set ups i may need.

Does the sponge affect the power of the pump noticeably? I want to run the return from my sump through a big sponge then back up to the main tank. Pump i have is only good for around 1250 at 4' head though. So if the sponge dampens that any more i think im gonna have to upsize my pump.

1200 gph in a 40 gal? That sounds like a turbulent tank man.
I don’t really notice the difference to be honest but they are truly under appreciated filters. I’ve used them to support my main tanks when I clean out my filters. Anyways 1.2k gph on a 40g isn’t bad I think at one point I had a 20g sump with a 1.6-1.8kgph pimp and a fx-5 on my 40g breeder. It was a heavily stocked stock tank

Sponges are really useful during power outages because you can always slap on a battery pump in a pinch and maintain your aeration and filtration. I keep battery pumps on hand mostly for keeping live bait alive, but they're great to have around in an emergency.

All I use most of the time, all most tanks would ever need.

Saw an aquatop 250 sponge at a lfs and needless to say i was intrigued. These things are gargantuan.

Does anyone have any experience with one of these beasts?

Didn't like the aquatops. With water changes I would get micro bubbles and it would make these filters float. Took a couple hours of squeezing them out and trying to bury them in the gravel to keep them down again.

Look for poret cube filters. Better in every way and fit better in the corners.
