spotted gar tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with the above my Florida Gar has no probelms with the fish in my tank and they are all very active.

I kept my spotted with a variety of tankmates, but the constants were a TSN, Clown Knife, Silver Aro, and polyterus sengalus and polypterus palmas. Never any problems, gar actually developed quite a loving relationship with my silver aro.
Kept it with a large pleco and they got along great till the pleco died. Kept it with a small pleco and the little punk harassed my gar. Stay away from pleco's, most other "oddball" or non-aggressive large fish are good for them.

TSN is a good choice especially if you get them both fairly small (less than a foot) and grow them out together. Generally they will ignore each other and as long as there is enough food and a few hiding spots for the TSN they will respect each others space. You could do a Lima instead, depending on your preference. I do not foresee an immediate problem with either of these options.
Keep in mind that even in a 360 you have to be careful not to overcrowd with these beasts with too many others. But it seems like you have additional monster options in case you want to relocate anything.
You can also keep spotted gars with pretty much any fish that arent too active/crazy and that cannot readily fit in their mouths.

I had my little 6" Florida w/ about 15 1-2" red devil fry and it was fine, but I wouldn't put him w any bigger than that. I also had a channel cat in the tank which I think ended up eating my poor gar... :(

yeah ill probably stick to my tig in that tank then, and then ill use my ray tank as a growout tank for my cats until i get the rays. but yeah for my spotted gars i was gonna do 4, then a tig, a clown knife, and an african arowana, in a 360, unless you think i should cut that down to 3?

thats a whole lot of gar you are considering there.
Keep in mind the rigidity of the gars and the fact that they will not be happy if they feel crowded by room, decorations, or other gars once they get large.
A 360 is plenty of space to grow out 4 spotteds, but you might want to consider relocating 1 or 2 or them once they get to be very large. It all depends though.
Estimates from what we think are spotted gars vary from 18"-30ish" in home aquaria.
If you have your heart set on 4, then go for it if you have the room to move 1 or maybe 2 if the situation arises.
I have never kept african aro's let alone with gars (i kept silvers w/gar), but the consensus on here seems to be that it would work out well.
Rest of the the stocklist looks good to me. I have kept CK's and TSN's with spotted gar with great success.

Enjoy your monsters!

well if it would be overstocked i could do two. there wont be any decoration to this tank, im going barebottom. just plenty of open room for swimming. so just two then? with one clown knife, a tigrinus, and my afro?
