That's a huge wasp nest . The Yellow Jackets love my house I believe it's the color. My house is gray and one season had to destroy 3 nest. Two of the nest were under ground. Got stung once. My neighbor is allergic to bee stings so destroyed a nest for him.
Oh how can I forget they found away in my basement had baby yellow jackets flying in the house.
It is and I was shocked when I just happened to look up and saw it as it is not very high up yet it's managed to go unnoticed until now..
A few years ago there was a big one in that same location but it was much higher up,it was right outside one of the third floor windows and I used that long distance wasp spray to shut it down.My wife noticed that one,she took a photo of it and sent me the image while I was at work.I stopped and bought the spray on the way home.

Looks like white faced or bald faced hornets.
I try to let these guys do their thing (unless they build somewhere that may pose a threat).
They are excellent fly and insect hunters.

My biggest fear is the giant Japanese hornet.

Those hornets would scare the hell out of me, they're huge, have loads of attitude, and I bet they can pack a fair old sting!

Maybe one day someone will make a film called "The 10ft killer hornets".

It would certainly rival "Aquarium of the dead!" Lol.

Same here,as long as they don't bother me they can stay.I'll just wait and see how much longer it takes before my wife discovers this one.

We're cursed with large numbers of these critters, especially the past couple years. Ours don't reach much more than 6 or 7 feet in length, but still...:)

Just discovered that Yellow Jackets have built a nest under the small wooden deck I have constructed adjacent to my little backyard pond. Way too close to one of my granddaughters' favourite spots when they visit...so it's gotta go.

If, like me, you just can't tolerate the idea of spraying poison around the yard...and I don't use any chemicals of any kind anywhere on my property, 100+ acres...these things are easy to eliminate after dark. Wait for a couple hours after sunset...all the stingers will be inside and more or less quiescent...and then just grab the nest and throw it into one of those 5-gallon plastic pails with tight-fitting lids, which for me are a mainstay of the aquarium hobby.

The hornets can be killed by drowning...carefully, allowing just a tiny opening for the bubbles to escape as the water fills the bucket. I'm sure an afternoon under the hot sun would work as well; I wish there were a faster, more humane method, but...

And, incidentally: hornet venom is not dangerous if ingested, only injected. Dead hornets are readily accepted, with complete safety, by fish of the appropriate size. Reduce, reuse, recycle! :)

Hell man, what size fish have you got that can readily take these "6 or 7 feet in length" monsters!!
