I think it's the whole "bring food home to the pride" instinct. My cat Squeaks left me 4 or so mice a week..

When I lived in Florida my cat would bring me Anoles (those lizards that are everywhere in FL), usually alive, all the time. lol

Ours liked to bring live chipmonk home. My sister was most impressed and did a little dance screaming all sort of odd things.

Shrews have an extremely high metabolism that requires constant live feeding. We tried to keep one that my son caught. Unfortunately, it did not end well.

Just think tho at one point in time we had giant carnivorous rodents, loosely related to shrews, walking the earth preying upon smaller rodents and reptiles. Granted they would've posed no threat to us being only the size of a house cat at best.

Most shrews are venomous so and most of them only get like 3in. Oh and I heard their bites are painful so nope.
