Darkness wouldn't do that. Try putting something in the tank like some driftwood with plants on it or piece of round pvc piping big enough the fish can hid in. if the fish goes for cover and hides there, and your water parameters are all good, then might just have a shy fish.

Another idea you can try is by lowering the water level in the tank by about half, and see if their is a change in behaviour.

Does the fish constantly face away from the front of the tank ?

I am not encouraging for the fish to hide so i am definitely not providing a place for him to hide lol .... it is very unseeming for an aro to hide. The water parameters are good - he is now the sole (well +bichir) resident of the tank.

For this set-up lowering the water can not be done because of the filter arrangement .... on the side

how about placing a large piece of driftwood at where he hangs out, forcing him to go somewhere else. maybe a change in diet "frogs" can give it a bit more exictement and approach you more
or bring in the XB and let this guy get a sun tan

Yeah, i am not really into fish moving. now that BBXB settled in his outdoor comm tank - i am not risking upsetting harmony there. besides i hate moving fishes.

i can not place anything in the corner where he hangs out - it is an outlet of the pump...

I still think you need to move the outlet, your fish is sat in front of it because it pushes water over its gills. It doesn't need to swim.
Try a power head first to see what happens, they're about 300 BHT for a cheap one. If the PH works you can then buy a better one.

Can not move it - it is fixed in the corner. It is one of those tanks with filter on the side. i can only move it to another corner ... lots of work involved and i am not there to supervise so i am not too hot about major changes ...

Can you not fit some pipe with a few L bends not be fixed over the outlet pipe?
Try the power head if you can't redirect the outlet flow, it will create current. IMHO if the fish starts swimming with new current it's staying in the corner because it's enjoying the current from the outlet.

Mine does the same mate. Power head it swims and surfs the current. no power head and it satys on the bottom but in the flow of the outlet. (not directly but enough flow for it to breath.)

OK i am gonna try power head - nothing to lose on that one. gotta instruct by phone and have to wait for weekend .... the downside of being away from home

although i dont see how it is going to help as the fish is already sitting at the outlet of very strong current...

Creates more current in the tank, makes the fish want to swim. I used one to try and reverse gill curl. The fish spent most of the day surfing the current. It might not work but its worth a try, especially if your fish starts to swim and you then know that your fish is not ill but just lazy.

Guess what guys - the aro cured itself. but with an unlikely cure. i was back this weekend back home (video update in the video lounge of tanks http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=349055 ) so found out this good news ... sorry no picture or vid of this tank or jar (i must have forgot inside tanks cos i filmed all my outdoor tanks).

The red aro is no longer sitting on the bottom but swimming around and being itself - and puffing its plumes at the BBXB which is on the other side of the tank protected by separator.

BBXB was moved back in because it was trashing the gold XB (which is really goldening up on the cheeks now). The hunch back green was attemted to be re-introduced into the comm but it was singling out HBRTG (until it was hidding in the corner for couple of weeks).

So the solution really was SR missing something to trash ... and not just anything but another aro ... i wonder if silver or black would have had the same effect. SR ignores the endli on the bottom. I guess i really need to try to find a feng feng hmmmmm fascinating

PS: BBXB development was not so satisfactory. he has elongated after its stint in the silver aro comm tank but he is not deep so looks like a sausage ... not proportional at all
