This thing did not have the tube, as the one he posted a picture of had. Its looked nothing like the thing he pictured. (not saying that it wasnt, just saying it did not look like that)

Nope i'm not sure on this, but its the only parasite i know of that looks like a star fish and is common in DIRTY tanks, usually Oscar tanks.

also there is no way a star fish would live in a fresh water tank.

That is the only reason for my post. To me the two pics look completely different even though your pic is pretty blurry. Maybe a hydra loses the tube at some point? I don't know. Hope you can find an answer.

I had Hydra in a old 55 gallon Oscar tank 10 years ago which i neglected and was not clued up on fish keeping as i am today, they looked like tiny star fishes, the tube grows the more they feed, and eventually gets fat, you have to electrocute the water with 9v batterys and a piece of wire to get rid of them.

Hydra can really grow anywhere, it doesn't need to be a dirty tank. I used to have some in my extremely clean, planted tank. I doubt what the OP has is a hydra polyp, they really don't look anything like a starfish... although it could be the free swimming medusa stage, maybe. A better picture would really help, if you can find the thing again.
