Start My Own Fish Store

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, I need to locate the African source. I should be able to locate this person or comany within the next day or so. Goliaths are doubtful but Vs are not.

No need to get nasty. I was going to ask how old you were, to see how long you plan until opening this store. If you are a teenager with hopes of someday going into the business, by all means ask as many questions as you can now. If you are a 45 year old who all of a sudden decided to go out on a limb and start a business, then you might want to reconsider.

Age has a lot to do with opening your own business if your young then u have the oppertunity to make this a long term plan and make opening your own business more likely probable and if your old and don't have the cash for a business venture well then you get differnent advice on what you can do...... so maybe how old are u isn't a stupid question? so how old are u???

sorry. i thought you were taking a jab at me. i'm 30. fishkeeping is a hobby/obsession for me. I spoke with an exotic fish seller. this is what he said:

for between $10,000 and $15,000 one buys a crate of fishes from the congo. many of the fishes die in transport. but death is calculated into cost. within the thousands of fishes in this import are a few "oddball" atfs. if you get lucky you get a lot of atfs. if you are not so lucky, you dont get any atfs. if you get very lucky you get a lot of goliaths.

shipping to california is better than shipping to the east coast. ther are only two stops in shipping fish to the west coast whereas there are three stops for the east.

Make sure that you plan everything out and just don't dive into it.

I think that most lfs owners are doing it for the love of the hobby more than making money off of it. You won't get rich, but if it's something that you would enjoy, then I would go for it.

Another thing to remember is that the more you bring in of a specie the more the value will go down...I think.

i'd suggest work for a nice lfs for atleast a year or two before trying to go out by yourself. You'll really learn what needs to be done to make it work, along with a lot of tricks that you'd otherwise need to learn by mistakes....which could be costly.
