Start of planted 10g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's a co2 level indicator. It was like 5 bucks at my lfs so I snagged it for my diy co2. The mystery plant is alright it start to wilt a bit but is now growing. Another week or so and I think it'll look nice :) are you talking about clipping the big ozelot sword leaf? I really didn't think it was doing badly but I'll watch it and if it starts to melt I'll clip it. I did trim the grass but you mean clip it completely down to substrate? It is spreading slowly but I'll have to give that a shot. Thanks for the advice herp I appreciate your interest in my tank :) I'll throw up some picks of the tank and the new tenants this evening

Well, I can tell you for sure that your DIY co2 isn't going to make enough co2 to really make that drop checker lime green or yellow lol. In fact, are bubbles comming out of your diffuser? I worry only because I know some diffusers need a specific pressure in order to work, and DIY yeast co2 does not have very high pressure what so ever.

I say clip it as well with the sword leaf because it looks so randomly there lol. Also, plants do good with a good pruning of old growth from time to time, so its not like cutting it will harm the plant.

The DHG, I clip it down so that I can just barely see it, it helps spread it faster for me, but it spreads slowly regardless. I planted mine not in clumps but by individual crown...its worth doing just cause it gets things spreading more evenly but it will spread regardless.

And np, I like talking about this stuff. College kid that couldn't find a summer job needs something to keep him occupied lol (talking about myself btw, no idea your age or employment status)

actually the co2 system does put out enough to turn the indicator green and it has a surprising amount of pressure i get the same amount of bubbles as ive seen actual systems get so i think its working well. the one difuser pic is actually like two minutes after i changed my mixture and it takes a few to build pressure.

ill definitely give the tank a good pruning here within a week or so as well. and im just a 24 yr old working stiff supporting my wife and kid and keeping a relaxing hobby lol

Just wanted to show that diy co2 Is much more efficient than some think :)

i used a one gallon arrowhead jug into a powerade bottle. and my mix is 1.5 cups sugar, 1 tsp yeast, filling my gallon jug halfway. i change it every 4-5 days. at first i just used an airstone but i wasnt happy with the bubbles so i switched to this plastic diffuser and i am VERY happy with it. honestly ive heard alot of negative talk about diy c02 and "horror stories" but i couldnt be happier with this system!

Update: trying out my lighting options. I started out with 2 zoo med 10w cfls and progress was decent. One burnt out on me in 2weeks though. I was then browsing through YouTube when I came across a video about household cfls in planted tanks. I decided to give it a shot. If you look at the New pics I'm posting my plants are definitely leaning towards the household cfl. The growth on the household side is hands down better and the cost us incomparable. I found mine at Wal-Mart 11 dollars for a 6 pack. 20 watts at 6500k. I paid 11 a piece for my zoomeds.
Another good cheap find in small planted tanks :) honestly Idk if any of this would work at all in much more then maybe a 20 gallon. But for a small tank there are definitely some cheap routes to get a great looking tank!
