Starting a 500 gallon build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Another weekend is here, so I can progress my project some more. Plan for today is:
-go look for additional driftwood
-add Purigen into filters (did my first 50% WC last night due to leeching tannins)
-tiny bit of electrical routing after picking up from 3-prong extension cables
-install UV filter if I can find the right sizes o-rings at Lowe's
-try to finalize canopy and base skinning design & material list

So I found an awesome piece of driftwood today, about 44" tall and probably 18-20" in diameter at the base, with lots of openings. Its not the branchy idea I had initially, but I love this piece and will change the tank setup to match. I am currently soaking it and wondering what people use to try and scrape driftwood with... sand paper? some other scouring pad? This piece is so large that soaking in a tub isn't going to be very practical, and I would love to just scrape it, rinse and only use a couple of WC's in a tub...

Nice work man. Love it. Some Haps might love inhabiting that upper area of the tank

What type of UV you plan on using?

I have a 36 TurboTwist, but for some reason it didn't have the o-rings it was supposed to. Waiting on replacements to install it.

Quick update on the progress. I am waiting on the o-rings for the UV from Coralife, but expect them sometime this week. The larger piece of driftwood has sunk enough to allow aquascaping a little closer to my final goal.

I have been swamped with work right now, so progress will be slow for another week or so I imagine.

Been a while since the last update, but I finally got some time to work on the tank.

1) Made up some hoses to use the filter to drain the tank in about 30 minutes.
2) Installed 12x Turbo Twist UV filter inline with one of the FX5 outlets.
3) Thoroughly rinsed both the FX5's.
4) Another aquascape tying down the largest piece of driftwood to eggcrate under rocks.

Hopefully by Christmas I can get the stand and canopy built, really bad this is all I have done in almost 2 months...

Family in town now for Thanksgiving and they suggested an interesting build idea for this tank that I thought I would throw around...

Anyone build a breakfast bar into a stand for their aquarium? I'm thinking about 6 doors along the bottom and then a fold out table for a bar type area...

Also, going to ThatPetPlace tomorrow to pick up some livestock since the tank has been stable for a while now and ready to start upping the stocking from about 20 pieces up to 50 or 60, including some haps.
