Starting a LFS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
PVC pipes is just run around the store. you have to drill small holes for valves that they sell. The regular airlines connect to them for the sponge filters. Just get a big enough air pump and get a back up pump too. I did this in my fish room and it works great. I am also planning on opening a fish store in the future. Planning on keeping and breeding the bread and butters too. Just trying to do that before I would open and get myself a custermer base though aquabid, ebay, and craigslist before I would open my doors.

If you're going to keep an indoor pond for show I'd only keep the hardiest fish in it. You never know what some jerk will throw in there.

first of all, you need serious cash to start up then its up to your imagination as be prepared to put in so many hours and expect nothing back

and to add:

I personally don't think you're really ready to handle the fish trade. Just based on your responses on this thread from others input and your comments. Explore the world little bit MORE before making the plunge.

THERE is a LOT to know & its not all about fish & filters. Been in business over 18 years, started working in the industry over 25 years ago when I was 15. I just opened a second store & its a pain in the arse!
Need MOney! Need a accountant, need a lawyer if you do not know much? Gotta deal with utility companys, phones, Merchant serivce (pain in the butt) Oh insurance!. You need a business plan. You could open a small store for about $25,000 if done right, but need another $25,000 sitting in the bank to get you through the first few months?

? how old are you? You seem to be young by your post.

me Dave

i am 15 rite now i been fish keeping since little and i was thinking of it. And i am going to explore more. If i wld start one i wild probly 20-25. And im studiying different fish and stuff on them.

Study up , save up. it's good to know what you want to do but leave yourself open for options. you're 15 so that just means you have a headstart at learning what you need to know. work in LFS stores , see how the business is run , see if it's for you. all form of entrepenuership is headache , big or small , but it's rewarding. If you're planning on university , think about Entrepenuership or at least Business Administration as a major , and take a minor in what you need for the fish business. who knows down the way you might change your mind about a small store and making the idea bigger (maybe you'll aspire to be in fish farming for example). also alot of factors to consider about location. 10 years from now alot could change , new buildings could be built for you to rent from , rent could go up or down , so it's good to have a flexible plan.

your school counciler can help you organize a plan , but the important thing for now is to stock up on information and experience.

you're never too young to make an honest buck and all the better if it's doing something you love.:D

I haver a job now on a farm. I am saving money. And still researching on all new fish i hear about. And i also thought about fish farming too
