Starting a Native Tank, need some help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think that will be fine. Be sure to keep feeding the bacteria while the tank is empty to keep the populations up. You can just add the same amount of fish food you would if it were stocked.

Be sure to post pictures once it's set up!

Thanks for the help.
I still have to sell two fish before I can turn the tank into a cold water set-up.
But it shouldn't take long.

:D

Perch. Maybe a small goggle eye.

yeah i agree with the perch / to me they are the best looking native and the easiest to have in captive

Also, would a grass pickerel be too large to keep in this aquarium? They are fairly inactive, so I thought I might try it.
Just wanted others opinions on it.

A pickerel would be fine in that tank. There aren't a whole lot of good pickerel tankmates, besides madtoms and larger minnows.

I was hoping that wouldn't be the case.
Would a lepomis or a warmouth work with a pickerel?
I've seen bluegills kept with pickerels, so just thought I would ask.

Madtoms are interesting little cats.

A warmouth might. The trouble with sunfish and pickerel together, especially in a smaller tank, is that it's easy for the sunfish to outcompete the pickerel for food. But the warmouth is more pickerel-like than any other sunfish; it likes to hang back, bide its time, and let the food come to it.

That would definitely be an interesting tank. Just be sure your stock are very close in size. Pickerel and warmouth both have very large gapes and may try to swallow their tankmates if they get hungry. I once kept a juvenile grass pickerel with a green sunfish about half its length; eventually the pickerel tried to take down the sunny, killing them both.

The Pickerel is 3-4'' and the Warmouth are 3-4''

I'm going to purchase them from

I've going to plant the tank pretty heavily, so I was thinking instead of my previous stock, doing
1x Grass pickerel
2x Warmouth

But before adding the warmouth and pickerel Im going to throw in a whole bunch of white cloud minnows. :D
