Starting an Iwagumi Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Alright I think I'm going to use the lights I posted in my first post, but replace the bulbs every few months like everyone is saying... I'm also going to get an Ehiem 2213 for filtration. The lights I posted will provide 8.7 WPG (being its a 15 gallon tank). Is this too much? Also I think I'm gonna get this diffuser (I have gotten them in the past and they've worked great)http://cgi.ebay.com/Nano-CO2-Diffuser-Aquarium-Plant-Regulator-Gas-Tank_W0QQitemZ250399135749QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3a4cf39805#ht_7093wt_941 and I think I'm going to get this bubble counter http://cgi.ebay.com/GX-CO2-Bubble-Counter-Japan-Glassware-Diffuser-Ada-T_W0QQitemZ250305632412QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3a4760d89c#ht_7167wt_941

this is the filter. substationally cheaper than ehiem. plus its a great filter! like i said just take out the brass flow indicator!! remember c02 is NOT nessecary but helpfull!(also very expensive)

in my experience, that filter is a POS... the zoo med 501 is a MUCH better option, but about $20 more. i still stand by my eheim suggestion :D

co2 is necessary in an iwagumi setup with HC. no co2 or even flourish excel alone will not work.

i have no problem with this filter AT all. great filter. simply removing the brass flow indicator helped so much. the ehiem is alot more expensive. I knew zoo med had one but didnt know what it was called. U stand by ur ehiem(more expensive) and ill stand by my substationally less expensive filter that works great for me. lol. (friendly joking)
co2 isnt necessary in really any setup but it is helpful to make it more lush.(i do have to go figure out HC, no great with plant names. lol)
all in all, if u go with the ehiem and co2 this 15g setup quickly is gonna cost more than buying prob a 75g. lol

I'm going to do two 2 liter bottles for yeast for my Co2 system, which should give me about 4-5 BPS. The whole Co2 setup is only going to cost about $30, so it's pretty cheap. Here is a picture of the hardscape without substrate. You can't really tell what it's gonna look like from this though, but it's just a general idea. Sorry for the crappy picture, took it with my lap top quickly haha. The rocks are going to darken up a lot once the water is in there.

30 bucks? pm me links if u would. im not a big fan of co2 but if i could do a co2 system for that cost i would.

i saw an ehiem filter for 30 gallon tanks at a LFS. 160 bucks!! with no biomedia!! my filter suggestion is only $25 throu the link and has some bio media. but im not a big flow guy on my planted tanks. dont like the look.

any ways, could u pm the links to the equipmetn ur using? u have my interest now

have you tried to grow HC without co2????? i rest my case :)

looks like youre off to a good start. i would definitely recommend a small canister filter. will give the tank a cleaner look and keep surface agitation to a minimum.

lights, i really prefer the intensity of T5HO but since its a small tank, i think PCs are fine. be sure to stay under 10,000k though, those blue lights are not good for freshwater plants.

what are you doing for dosing/fertilization? you need to have a full dosing routine if you want to be successful with HC. also, are you deadset on HC? from my experience this is a maintenance nightmare. i got it to grow fairly well but its VERY delicate. after a few months it started to uproot; i think because it got too thick. i ended up with balding patches as it was all floating around. in the end i ripped it out and started over with my foreground. may want to give glossostigma a try.

also, i personally love blyxa japonica. its my favorite plant of all time. very beautiful and great for a ground cover plant. grows fast and send off side runners all the time which you can split into more plants. it gets a little taller, but if you give it strong light it will stay low. great for giving you that "grassy field" effect

I'm considering doing dwarf hair grass too, I heard it's easier. The lighting is 6,700 K which should be perfect, right?
