I had a thread about finding out what chchlids I could breed in my 36g bowfront. Well tragedy struck my little tank. Heater malfunction killed all 4 acara's and my red sev. I traded a brand new heater for one I had on my 220g, I put the older one on the 36g. And it lasted like 3 weeks, then got stuck on while I was working. I came how from work Friday and my fiánce had a pouty look on her face. She knew how much I wanted a red sev, she was very supportive. Well, I've decided to go with HRP's instead of getting more acara's. Mostly because my LFS has absolutely no acces to them and he told me he will give me a decent store credit for fry. I ordered a trio (2F 1M) from florida tropica fish direct. I have already been in contact with them, amazing people by the way. I have a few questions about the hrp's

What are my odds of getting a pair from the trio? They will be 3". Should I have bought the smaller 1" size and get 5 or so and let them pair off naturally?

Will the pair be fine in the 36g? Is it big enough for them?

Also anyone have any experince breeding these guys? Is it as easy as I have read? Any insight would be great.

Honestly, the 36g will be tight. What do you plan on doing with the babies if you get them? The minimum breeding tank for them should be 55 gallons.

Now that being said, blue acaras are great parents. The minimum breeding age is around when they reach 4 inches. Imo you should have gotten 5 smaller, but it is what it is. I'd say you have good odds (75%?), but to increase the odds when they reach 4 inches or so feed them live food and increase the water temp. (and of course give them a bigger tank with highly filtered water)

^^He said he was going with HRP's this time around.

I think a 36g will be fine for them. How big do they get...like 4" maybe 5" for males and 3-4" for females. If they're anything like convicts they should be simple to breed. I've had convicts breed at 1".

Thanks guys. Yes I went with HRP's this time. They came in today via FedEx from florida tropical fish. The male is almost 4" and the 2 females are between 3"-3.5". Very pretty fish, amazing blue on the fins even right out of the box. I will post some pics when they settle in. I also picked up a small H. Bocourti and a small H. Pearsei. Very nice people, and shipping was amazingly cheap.

Instead of using one large heater, use 2 or 3 small ones, that way if one gets stuck it will take several hours for it to overheat your tank. For small tanks (36 gal) use only the smallest heaters... they might work overtime to keep your water stable but at least you know it will never cook your fish.

And of course keep a digital thermometer that you can easily monitor at all times. Mine is in front of the tank so every time I get close it shows me the temperature even if I wasn't looking for it.

Well I tend to keep a larger heater on my smaller tanks, thaty way in case of an ich breakout I have no problem getting my tanks 86*+. I have never had any problems in the past, I guess I learned the hard way. Atleast I didn't loose any of my prized cichlids or pleco's in my main tank. I now have a smaller heater on that tank.

aww man sorry about your loss, especially with the red sev. I've been looking for one for over 3 months now. If I ever losted one like that I would be devastated
