Step by step Noob 120g set up

Day 15: I have not added any more fish due to my continuing battle with ich. Tank is at 86, salt has been added but a few fish are still showing mild symptoms, one still has it pretty bad, 12 or so spots of ich. Grrrrrr. Hopefully its only a matter of time before its eradicated. If not in 10 days I'm getting rid of the fish, and letting the tank sit for two weeks with no livestock so the ich won't have anything to attach to and will die. Man this sucks to wait so long.

In good news, I've decided to pick up a new retic ray from my lfs. It is breed worthy. I just need a female now, oh and a healthy tank to put him in

Day 16: I will be picking the new ray up in a week so I need to get this tank cleaned of ich so that I can bring the temp and salinity down! One fish still showing white dots but they should drop off and get fried in the temp and salt. All the fish are happy it seems. I don't know how the heck the goldfish have lived through all this. At 85-86 I'm feeling like them being gar food was a better fate but they seem perfectly cheery still. I guess when you've lived the feeder life your bred to be able to endure crappy conditions.

Oh and just a warning that if you're using fake plants from craft stores, check to see if they have metal wires inside the plants. If so, they'll rust and kill your fishes. I just finish setting up my 120 gallon planted tank as well.

Not to sound rude but do you have proof that rust kills fish ? Ive had fake plants (metal inserts) in my tank for several months now with no ill effects. In the wild why would corals grow on ship wrecks , anchors etc. Infact most fish are attracted to wrecks where they spend most of the day feeding and at night hiding. Freshwater fish live amongst allsorts of waste metals that get thrown into lakes, rivers & ponds. Our local pond has a rusted shopping cart and we see a huge bass always hanging around it. I think the whole "rust will kill fish" was a internet rumour that spread......like rust !

Not rude at all, I'm actually really glad you asked! Someone said that in this thread, I did a quick google search and found a couple confirming stories from people so I believed it...I guess this calls for more research (I love this part)!

I made a cool pick up today of 5 fish, more Leporinus to be exact. There are no longer any signs of Ich. I'm keeping the temperature high (87 now) until next wednesday to ensure destruction of the life cycle. I did a nice water change and re-salted, and raised the filter output so it agitates the water more for increased oxygenation while the tank is heated. Now back to the Leporinus, most of them are smaller, four inches or so, but the biggest one is a whopper! 14 inches long, 2-3 inches thick, maybe 4 inches tall! They love to school, and just follow the big one around. Another cool thing is that beside the big one, all of them were wild caught by the seller while he was in Peru on a collection trip (that would be so fun). The tank is cycled but this should add some nice load to better develop the bacteria for when the rays come in. Any one have experience with rays and Leporinus together? I know I saw them together at the national aquarium but those tanks and rays were huge. Things are going well and in a few days I'm probably going to take my goldfish and several Leporinus to the lfs and see if they will hook me up with some in-store credit for them.

Look at the reflection in this one to see how thick he is

Day 17: The tank is looking better and better. Absolutely no ich with several days left before I take delivery of the new ray, right on track. I picked up some algae wafers and the leps love them. Of course they were loving flake food too. I will finally be getting my heater and air hosing stuff tomorrow. Shipping was cheaper, but really long. I've decided I want an ornate birchir in the tank so I'm looking around. Any suggestions?

Tank update! I sold off the Leporinus except one I decided to keep, but I also sold the pleco, and goldfish. Then I picked up the new ray!

The store did a great job, and I followed proper acclimation procedure when I got home by using and air hose to do a siphon drip that took me 45 minutes

The ray went in the tank, rediscovered what substrate is (he's been kept on bbottom), and buried himself. 10 minutes later I decided to experiment by putting some black worms in.. He sensed them right away and came out hunting and eating, yea! 24 hours later he was playing on the side glass. The next day I added my other ray and they got along nicely. I fed defrosted cooked shrimp and both ate wonderfully, and absolutely crushed black worms. I've since added a couple other small fish from the other tank that I'm getting rid of. Ive added the hydor heater that's working great. I'll start the tank snapping when the are more settled in. for now, here are some pics.
