sterlet vs. shovel nose sturgeon

i know that sterlets stay smaller.
i know that sterlets can handle warmer water.

what else? does any one have pics of a sterlet? (i have a SN)
do they look similar, behave similar?
growth rate?


i will have the tank capacity to hold them, i know it will get 50 feet long, i know, i know, i know ... i already have one, i am just wondering about the differences ...

Sterlets. I have one coming soon.sterlets stay smaller and are easier to come by. haven't come acroos a shovelnose yet.

I could be wrong but I belive sterlets get bigger and need colder water than shovelnose...

You have been misinformed shovelnose are a slightly smaller and significantly less heavy fish. Shovelnose do quite well in moderately warm water unlike the sterlet which does better in cooler water. In the wild sterlets usually inhabit the zone between fresh and salt water and in an aquarium do better with some salt in the water.

Sterlets are a heavier thicker less gracile fish than the shovelnose. Sterlets need a more open wider aquarium than shovelnose.

Sterlets maximum size is 125 CM and 16 kg

Not futile, just make sure you never release these fish into the wild since they are not native to NA and even then if they are native to where you are (Europe) any captive fish should never be released into the wild for any reason.

although i would like to start a sturgeon pond down the road, and so i am going to be in the market for some european sturgeon!
if anyone knows how or where i could get them, i would appreciate it (although i have been informed it is probably the wrong time of year to be looking for them )

A sterlet is a European sturgeon dude. If you put them in a pond just make sure there is no way at all they could escape. No matter what the flood stage of local streams or any conceivable accident could release them into native streams. Where did you get the shovelnose? It's been a long time since I saw them for sale. Shovelnose will do well in a pond, why would you want sterlets for a pond?

i don't want sterlets. i was just curious about them, and i know they are pretty available in the LFS ...
i have talked to a few people who know more about sturgeons than me, and the fish i have (that was sold as a SN) is probably a white sturgeon. he is pictured in my native tank thread (with pickerel and paddlefish).
i am working on gettting better pics of all fish, so maybe the sturgeon can be possitively ID'ed

as for them escaping, they will not be able to get into any local waters.

I've kept several shovelnose but they all died when the tank split apart in the middle of the night. I didn't know until the next morning. I am lucky enough to know several people who make their living either breeding or keeping sturgeon in public aquariums. But yes I am nutty about sturgeon and paddlefish.
