Still born or too late.............

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know your more experienced than I am but maybe next time if you sense that your female may be prego yank out all the other rays and leave her in by herself its a less risk at losing thousand dollar pups. But very sorry for your loss We all know how you must feel.:(:(:(:cry::cry: but best of luck for your future in breeding those awsome rays.

Dear all

Many thanks for your concern, much appreciated.
Glad you guys like the pic.:D

As for seprating the rest from the female, It would be a challenge as i keep them in a large pond and i can't tell who pregnant from above.:cry::cry:

anyway, will keep u guys updated.

Hi Tyson,

I would'nt worry about it too much, most likely all pups were dead at the time of birth, this is often the case when prematures are born at the same time. Wether the prematures are the cause of death, or the death of a big pup causes the mother too get rid of everything is unclear.

Better luck next time.

By the way another option is too separate this female in two months time so that there is less chance of complications next time.

Greetings Mark

I think that the last 2 pictures (are these the same pup?) are from pups that died earlier on during gestation. I have seen dead, almost mummifed pups come out with live pups. I think the female still holds onto these dead pups and they are all released at the same time. The other look pretty full term to me or close to it. The only strange thing is it looks like in the first 2 shots that part of their intestines prolapsed. It also looks partially rotten (around the gill area).

I have a theory... While I have seen non-pigmented dead pups expelled with live healthy full term pups, it seems like having a dead fetus would make the uterine area more susceptible to infection and maybe the rest of the pups are at risk too. Perhaps at some point this led the rest of the pups she was carrying to die. Eventually, she would have just expelled them all.

Just my thoughts.

I'd keep an eye on the mom. We've had females hold onto dead pups (confirmed on ultrasound) for about a week and the female was fine, but it's worth watching her IMO.
