so apparently white is out for substrate, but what about a white background? to get to the point, what is the best color combo for substrate and background color to get the most out of my fish.
will black sand and white background or vice versa really make that much of a difference with what i get out of my fish?

It will make a little difference. It depends on the fish/colors in the fish. IDK about white background I've never seen it done. You could always try it and see how it looks on your fish but use a medium color or darker substrate to balance it. Def. never go black sand/black background(unless you have a fader FH) or white/white.

so, if i use black 3m quartz (i would like to use it because i already have some at my house), what is the best color background to counter the black? the fh fry are red dragon, zz malau, and platinums.
sorry for all the questions, but i am completely new at this.

i disagree. i think black/blacks looks amazing. i will never use any color other than black in any of my tanks, especially white sand

What FH are you using it on? I have black/black tanks but they're not FH tanks. And I would not put my Kamalau or RD in black/black. Already done that as that's how the tanks they are in were set up and they look like crap IMO in that setting. Hell try it I don't care. But your fish will look very dark. And it won't show how nice your fish actually is. Keep your FH ph at 5.0 too while you're at it since we don't care how the fish looks more about how the tank looks.

Black/Black awesome on some fish. But put some FH in it and it looks too dark, don't see the color of the fish/etc. It's obvious black/black makes your fish look dark, white/white makes it look washed out.

If I wanted black sand I'd at least try to use a blue back..

i have black/black on my moba tank and love it.
that said i think i will go black sand and white background for the fhs.
