I know.. It's just my dream one day that many people will know the answer(s) to this question and it will be a far easier question to answer with many members here knowing what doesn't really work and with more people agreeing.
Red substrate should suffice without a background or with a colored background(other than red I would think red substrate/red background would be too much)
No background is better than a black background. Also the idea is to have it colorful or at least pretty neutral for color range.
Think you probably read this but these are kinda the rules you wanna stay with:
You will have those who try to prove the "no black background/black substrate" rule wrong. But having done black/black I can tell you it doesn't look so hot with a pearly high quality fish. Even doing something like natural gravel with a little bit of white gravel mixed in to make it pop and add "high lights" is ok. Again just avoid going way too light or way too dark altogether unless we're talking Super Red Texas, Jin Kang, or Parrot in which black/black works because the fish is solid and very bright.
cichla, i definitely appreciate your input along with everyone elses. not sure if i made it clear but the fry that i bought were red dragon, zz's, and platinums.
