I want one soo bad but the wife would kill me lol I already spend way more than I should on this hobby. and the only reason I want one is so I can show it off lol sad I know...

I respect this opinion but have to disagree, I'm the one whom started this post but it's only intent was nothing to do with a filter war in anyway. When you look its the experance and input that I wanted without the arguement. To me I might make more of it than it has to be but if you are going to keep aquarium's you'd best understand filtration. I am saving to go to a bigger system and this time I'm going to be ready no guessing. Yes my origanial question was specific to the FX5, but this thread has gone in many directions (not all good) I feel I spent good money for my FX5 and I just maybe need to learn a few tricks to make it better because it is not perfect. I wish I had a Aquarium Guru next door but such is life. These forums are my Guru (sorry if this sounds like a poor me line:confused:). See many of you have been at this so long that talking about something at this level may be boring, but it's you folks that can help newbies allot of trouble and money? I have been in and out of fish for more than 40 years now and though the principals don't change each time it's like learning all over again because of progress if thats the proper term.

You know I was thinking earlier (yes I can do that every once and awhile:nilly:) Here I am with a system I have know idea how much I have spent on $$$$ and all I have is maybe $75.00 or so of simple oscars in this tank. Wouldn't trade them eather they may be common but unlike many fish they are smart. Oh can't leave out the parrot fish!! It's not beating a dead horse .

And a 230$ filter? That's hardly showing off, maybe the 380$ eheim is what you meant, personally id never pay more then 230$ for a canister, for anything more I could get a big sump, everything included, the thing with sumps are buying the pump, good pumps are generally 80-200$ Atleast ones that don't rape your energy bill.

Correct you are, F1. Pumps for a sump are a killer on the hip pocket. I elected to run two 1800 GPH pumps for $350, when I could have bought one GIANT pump for the same amount. I did that so if one goes out, I am not out of business while I scrape the funds together to replace a pump. The sump was very cheap to build, and I couldn't be happier - except the water noise.

The point that this thread has a 124 responses and there is a ton of threads comparing or talking about it makes an FX5 a legend. If the filter was such a piece of crap then why is every one whipping theirs out to compare size and performance. ;) I don't go out and compare a corvette to a Prius, I compare it to other fast cars.

Well as above, Any of the Eheim folks have any comments? If it's ok let me alter the subject a bit. Are Most of you running the FX5 just as Fluval has recommended or do you have any changes you make? Again as most of you can tell I'm am not from a background in Marine Biology. I have been reading many articles that have been done that are very scientific allot which is over my head but what it boils down to is surface area and the amount of time required for the Bio filtration to occur. In short they claim that moving this water past the Bio filtration as fast as possible may not be the best answer. IE look at the study of the 2080 vs. FX5 where the Eheim cycled a tank almost two days quicker than the FX5 my point being that maybe this also holds true for not just Eheim but the Rena and others with a large volume? Is there anyone on the forum that has a background with Marine Biology or close that maybe explain this better than I. In short again maybe GPH isn't the beat all when it comes to filtration. I wish I could quote the exact articles but being from another forum source I'm not sure its allowed. This guy is smart wish he was on here to chime in, it make for great conversation. So, we have concluded that people love the FX5 it fills a nitch so to say. So if you are willing lets trying altering the subject from just I love my FX5 to actual explains of your FX5 systems, how many do you run, how are they configured, etc. And yes some of this may be comparision to other filters. I'm not trying to drag it out more but see if maybe more detail would keep from making it boring? 100 people saying I love my FX5, and nothing else I would agree thats old news.

Well, I prefer the eheim classics and prof ii series...I never owned a 2080 but I hear not so great reviews on that concerning lack of flow.

I don't like filters with electronics...that's just me because I don't want to mix reliable mechanical parts(pumps) with not so great silicone chips. Between the 2260 or 2262 and 2080, I would take the former any time. Why buy a filter that has is more expensive but have both a slower flow rate and and smaller capacity?

You started a thread with a title that bashed a highly regarded filter system and you didn't expect people to respond to that? Bottom line is people are going to like what they like, for the reasons that they decide are justifiable and they will stick with it. In my opinion, the FX5 is a pretty good overall value, plain and simple. Poking at people for what they believe always incites a negative response. If you want to start a disussion, you have to begin with a clear and define topic to discuss and support that topic with facts, not a negative comment with no factual basis behind it.

Why do you have such an issue with the fact that I am a mod? Can I not participate and contribute to a discussion? I was merely trying to understand your point in this thread. What I am to gather is that you are simply questioning whether or not you have set it up correctly becaus you are not seeing the results that others are seeing, correct?

You are correct, that excess water flow could potentially impact the biofiltration of a filter system, but not to the point of making it ineffective. I go back to my prevous statement of how many people overdo the amount of bio filtration that they really need. This is most likely because there is no hard set number on deciding whether it is adequate or not.

In reference to the setup of the FX5, I have it setup just as the manual states, 6 foam pads and ceramic media/scrubbies, minus the polishing cloth. I ran two on my 265, with the outputs towards the center and the inputs towards the ends of the tank. No, the tank doesn't stay crystal clear, but it does stay pretty darn clean. Nothing a little tank maintenance can't take care of. For maintentance, I cleaned out one filter completely every six months or so.

Lol, I feel you, their so majestic like. My gf would kill me too, then after a few days she would agree based on the coolness factor.

Wow that's a lot of cash. If I ever get a bigger tank then a 125 I will use a sump, but for 75-90-110-125 I think cans are perfect.

If some people are out comparing Chevys to BMWs...you'll probably get the same reaction.
