Still Don't Understand FX5 Mania?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm with ecoli, not a fan of having a microchip in an aquarium filter. That's why I'm a big fan of eheim classic's 221x, pretty good canisters IMO. Although their flow/mechanical filtering is weaker compared to fx5, the bio filtering is not. I have 2x 2217, 1x 2215 with 2217 impeller and a rena xp3 filtering my 180g. But for folks with 300g+ tanks, these smaller filters aren't going to cut it so fx5 or eheim 2262 or sumps will be the only choice.

$200 for fx5 + $75 media = $275. No o-ring to replace in the future with fx5, although it costs little money.
$340 for 2262 with media included, note 3x more media than fx5 and more flow and most importantly (to me) no microchip to worry about.

$65 difference folks. Heck I may want to buy one just for the heck of it even when I don't need one.

Or maybe the 2262's don't come with media, like the smaller classic's?

I don't know where u got those numbers.....

My fx5 brand new with tons of media (all sponges, 2x bio max/carbon and prefilter) with s&h 230$

The micro chip makes your filter run more efficiently, purges air and is a failsafe if your impeller gets clogged or motor gets to hot and many other features.

Current prices(big al)

Fx5 - $240
Eheim 2262 - $340

Both empty.

It takes about $100 if you use seachem matrix to fill Eheim up, $140 if you use eheim substrat pro.

It will take about $40 to fill FX5 up?(I don't see a package deal F1)

So the difference to me is about $160 dollars between the two. I myself am willing to pay the difference to get the Eheim...

If my tank is in the garage, I would be much more inclined to do a sump but it is in the living room and I have other things non fish related to consider :)

Now that I looked at it, I did find some packages with media included...but unfortunately the media that is included is kinda junkie(carbon and ammonia chips), so my current cost estimate still remains...

i like my FX5's. and at this point, even if something cheaper or better came along i couldn't afford to change. i have 6 FX5's 3 running and enough spare parts to build a 7th. one of the things that has always driven me is the ease of repair if something goes wrong, and always having a backup plan. if i had different filters on every tank i wouldn't be able to afford this hobby at all.

the Fx5 holds all the bio-media i need, and filters well, even when i don't clean the filters as often as i should. and they are EASILY modified internally and externally to fit your needs. it's a GOOD and dependable all around filter.

Same dude I bought mine from, price went up obviously due to popularity and demand since then.

6 sponges, bio max and prefilter included, or you can get 2x biomax instead of prefilter. That setups enough to support 125-150 gallons with a good circulator Ime.

Your numbers are way off. I just bought pond Matrix @ 4L @ 23$ from that Pet place and that would fill either filter. And with your numbers for the FX5 is still 100$ cheaper almost 50% of the cost of an FX5.

In the end I prefer sumps or glass filters but the FX5 is still an awesome filter.

It only takes 4L to fill up fx5? I will use 15L...if I go that route, I will buy 20L of seachem matrix for $99...

Note the bio load difference.
