Still Don't Understand FX5 Mania?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
F1 thanks for your patience!! I know your bitting your tongue!! You may have tryed in the past but tell me a way to load this filter in a way where it's going to live up to the hype...please?

It's all good man, I took her for a test drive, she did zero to sixty in 2.5 seconds! I'm happy, beat the hell out of my xp4 (0-60 in 7 seconds flat) and dual ac110 (0-60 in 4 seconds flat).

If your tank is understocked 1 tray of all bio media is fine, medium stocked 2 trays of bio media, and heavily stocked all 3 trays full of bio media. And take the pointless dual outputs off, just run the pipe, more gph, more power IME. And chem stars seem to have the least affect on gph out of any bio I've used!

You know another issue I have is two dogs, I mean I don't sit there and dump dog hair in the tank. I do have glass covers so tell me how dog hairs manage to make it into the filters? Has anyone else ever get this? I mean I vacuum my carpet????

As I cleaned the FX5 today it's true it still in my mind is just as when I started this thread. I only have the C530 here to compare it to. The FX is a smaller filter. I'm sure the EHEIM 2262,2080, Rena XP4, The Marineland C-530 and its knock off's all are larger and again I'm no scientist but there are a Ton of studies out there that claim surface area, volume, to be as important. Another thing I noticed is the way the trays are made if you use no premedia to increase flow then all you have is just Bio clear to the bottom and back into the tank. Now I've seen a few ways to modify the trays and get rid of some of those side sponges that to me do next to nothing(I have the same issue with the 406 side sponges, when I clean they hardly need to be touched. So im cleaning to much or there doing nothing). Someone chimed in last night and mentioned a way to reload the trays with some modified material? I just do not want to alter the filter itself at this point. I swear I don't kow why I do this to myself!!! I open it up as above and expect you all to be nice and friendly.....I understand many are into this filter and can get upset when someone puts it down. So if I'm going to get my ??? chewed all I ask is at least try to give me ways to reconfigure this filter from stock to change my mind?:banhim:

OK, so I don't understand what you are trying to accomplish with this thread. Many people have posted in response to your question, yet without any factual basis, you refuse to acknowedge what so many others have realized. Granted, a few could have used a bit more tact, but they have offered their thoughts non the less. Yes, the FX5 is not the best filter on the market, but it is one heck of a value in comparison to other filter options.

XP4- Not even close in gph. I love Rena, but the just don't compare
Eheim - Great filters, plenty of flow and media space,.....huge price tag
Marineland - No personal experience, but from reviews I've seen, but it looks to be rated lower than the FX5.

You keep bringing up the media space, which is important, but with the proper media selection you will have more bio surface area than you will ever need. Keep in mind, most people over filter their tanks. An FX5 per the box, rated for a 400 gallon aquarium.

My point of the thread is to open up some good debate (is that not part of what a good forum is?) I am being truthful when I say Yes this filter pushes some water and has some neat options. I've never even used the price arguement I dont believe? As I pointed out I don't understand the way this filter is designed inside. Today I wanted to try and run the filter with no filter media in the middle for flow Then I realized this only leaves you Biomax into and clear out of the filter. So you have this awsome water fountain going threw Biomax and all the crap shooting out with that awsome fountain. When I do use the Fluval Fiber pads they gum up in no time. The side sponges from what I can see do just about nothing or they should be good and dirty when I clean the filter. So I started the thread to see if I'm missing something and to get advise. And this is not just because it's a Marineland but its all I own to compare it to. I tell you the design of that filter the water has to go through 4 trays of media not around it. And thats face it we have been off subject just a few times to say the least. So everyone to there opinion you are the admin if you feel I have no more valid points to carry on this thread let me know? In addition I hope some others have picked up some good information even someone from another thread chimed in to say they enjoyed the convo.

Would it have gotten to the size if it wasn't worth the read?

I currently have 4 fx5's running along with other brands, sumps, ac110's and all kinds of homemade systems. Nothing is better than the other. Every brand i've tried eventually breaks or malfunctions. Its nice to save money but it sucks when you come home to broken equipment on a daily basis. In the past 2 years of running 29 tanks i've had several pumps burn out, marineland 350 canisters crack and leak, but my 4 fx5's are still running smooth. There easy to take apart and quick to clean. I like running an fx5 with an additional sump or h.o.b. No one filter will take care of any tank with the large fish we keep.
