Stingray & Ammonia Troubles (Pt 2 )

What’s your turnover rate on your tank? You should shoot for minimum 10x turnover ( I may have missed it if you said what it was).
Also I would not turn the pump off during feeding, rays produce tons of ammonia. If your worried about otter not getting food rays are very smart you can target feed with tongues

To be honest it seems like the tank is not fully cycled you should have nitrates, I would do what has already been suggested stop feeding the fish and target feed your ray only daily water changes and dechlorinater make sure the brand you use detoxifies ammonia.
I know for a fact my turn over rate is not ten. It was orgionally build as a salt water tank. I'm so much as worried as Otter not getting food, its food decaying in the socks. It was suggested I turn the pump off so no food would suck in and see if that would help my issue. My tank has been established for almost a year at this point, unless it was disrupted and can't catch up. I will double check my brand detoxifes ammonia.

Have you tested your tap water for ammonia? I’m thinking that either your not probably using the test kit or your tanks not cycled. Are you shaking the second nitrate bottle for the full minute that the instructors say to do. If you skip this step you won’t get propper readings. I agree with the posts above stop your feeding until you get this under control as rays are very sensitive to ammonia.
My tap tests for ammonia. I'm following the directions in the booklet when I water text.

I would double check the instructions to make sure you are following them correctly They are very spicfic regarding the nitrate test and if not followed will not show nitrate on the test. The fact that your telling us the tank has been cycled for a year means that you should absolutely be showing nitrate readings. What are the ammonia readings in the tank your B.B. should be processing the ammonia out of the tank if cycled.

Ok what is otter eating currently? I would get some tongues and feed most favorite food for my rays it’s crawlers. Use the tongues with favorite food what ever it may be and put it in front or as near as possible let her come to the tongues when she ready and let the food go as she raises the front of her disc she will learn when she sees the tongues it means dinner time. I use these

As far as the sump looks a little small to me but I’m ridiculous when it comes to filtration for my tank. I’m not as knowledgeable as most in here hopefully they can chime in. I think it would work better if you put a baffle where the filter socks are and have it up flow through the lava rock and most importantly increase flow to 10x turnover. What size are your drains? Could the drains handle 10x turnover? Here is an old pic of a 10 gallon sump filter I made years ago for a 40 gallon breeder worked great. You can see the first baffle I used 1.25” pvc couplers to hold up egg crate then media on top.

Hopefully you can get it all worked out. I would also do as suggested make sure your following the test kit instructions to get accurate results.

How much ammonia is your test kit showing out of the tap?

Sump looks terrible. You always have to think that the water will 100% try to get through the sump with the least amount of resistance. To me it looks like the water can easily avoid 90% of your media and get through to the pump without any problem.

My ammonia reading is between .25-.5.

Thank you, this definitely helps. My ammonia out of the tap is about .5. Everything is about 1.25 or 1.5 pipe wise. I would have to remeasure. I'm sure my pipe could, I'm not sure my weirs could handle that much.
