Stingray issues, what can it be?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have the hardest stingrays to get going and no miricle they are heathy.

Post em up.

Pics are worth a thousand words. People in a ray forum like experience with, well, keeping rays. Just cause you know pools doesn't mean you're much help to people with sick rays. You've helped this thread in no way, shape, or form. I'd work on something more constructive, like your own thread showing everyone how healthy your rays are and how great your systems are. Share your experience there.

Lets get this thread back on track and try and help work out what is wrong with the rays. I think David W is spot on when it comes to the diagnosis. i have spent the morning reading science papers on Potamotrygon parasites. I came across one interesting paragraph. that states organ damage can occur even when the parasites have no direct contact with the organ. I suspect this is due to the stress on the rays hepatic system(blood, veins, liver etc) even via an intestinal or gill parasite.
here is the quote " According to Aime and Pappas (1983) the effects of parasitism can be observed in organs with which the cestodes do not have contact; fibrosis was observed in the intrahepatic ducts and also lesions on the liver surface of vertebrate hosts "
What that basically boils down to is liver failiure.
Also in the paper it mentions parasites had little effect on adults, which would make sense in this case, as if the Liver etc was damaged it would only be able to support a fish when younger and as it grew the liver would not cope.
I am not stating that this definitely what is wrong with your rays but it would make sense if the parasite was ray specific (which most ray parasites are by the way).

so i would follow David W advice on treatment course to at least eliminate this as a cause.

hope this helps

You can also go back to jstavis thread where he had a necropsis done on his rays which showed severe gill damage from parasites, ie: gill flukes. Everyone assumes that fish (rays) or animals can live fine long term with these or any parasites. I dont believe so, while they might live for a long period the parasite still is causing damage. Whether there is an outside source of stress or not the damage caused by the parasite will eventually kill the host. Apparently in jstavis' case the gill damage eventually led to sepsisu in the blood stream. All this seems quite feasible in Tor's issue
The above issue is the prime reason I will profilactilly treat and quarantine for a period of at least 30 with a broad spectrum parasitic medication. Zoodiver is a big proponent of long term treatment to kill the adult parasite and all potential hatchings from the eggs

Thankyou all for the time taken to help me out, i really appriciate it alot.. I will order prazi and metro over the weekend, im just curios on amount of metro? In grams or something :) Probably do a big order on the different once.. When i get it, i will take out the specific ray and threat it, when i find out if it whether metro or prazi that works, i will do the whole system! Sounds ok?

Thanks again everyone!
