Mine seem to do that when they are searching for food But otherwise, is normal activity..

He keeps swimming near the top of the surface, ocassionally sticking his nose out of the water. Although its not constant, its more than he was doing yesterday, which was zero. (Ive had him for 3 days) He's in there with a lot of tetra's (they were cycling the tank for about 3 weeks)
nitrate=0
ammonia =.5 ppm
nitrite=0
Temperature=84 F
Question: I've never had a stingray nor seen anyone elses tank for an extended amount of time. Is this normal behavior?

I would be more concerned with the .5 ammonia then anything. That is a normal ray activity

Normal Ray behaviour in good water but good water should have nitrate present

I was waiting for someone else to catch that. First 2 things I noticed when I looked at the parameters.
Also I would not use tetras to cycle a tank for a ray

old post but if it helps anyone in futuer the rays will stick to the surface if there is low oxygen and they will swim in the inlets to keep out of the way of other fish if they are getting bullied / unwanted breeding attempts . this is from my experience. seporate and oxygenate. good luck .

Thank you for the information, just had a ray and it does this sometimes. MFK threads always answer my concerns, sorry if a very old post got bumped - just wanted to thank everyone for the info!
