Stingray with Black Arowana questions..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have nother question...

At what size should I get the rays? Lets say I get a 6-10'' aro, would it be ok If I got rays that had a 6'' diamete disk?

I was thinking if I put a piece of bogwood in there I could plant amazon swordtails on it...

I tried to look for the Book "Stingrays as pets" and "Stingrays othe The Amazon" at my library but they didnt have it. Im going to get it on amazon along with an english copy of Indo dragon!

yea, that combination of ray and aro size would be ok. They leave it other alone basically:)

Also, as far as filtration go's I was planning on using two rena XP canisters and doing 50% water changes weekly with AquaSafe drops placed in the water before adding it. Would this be alright or do I need to do more water changes? I do 50% water changes on all my tanks Bigger ones first, smaller ones last.

Also, you gotta post some close-ups of your ray's and aro man!

I would get a big wet/dry personally.
I feel that it's much better for biological filtration (which you'll need with rays and aros). They're easier to take care of and if you DIY they're cheaper as well:)

here is a few shots:D

well 50% a week is kind of alot i would be better to do like 20-30% but if no one has told you a big aro is expensive like 100-200$ so you may be tempted to buy a small or baby one if you do don't buy one that still has the egg sack at this point thay are very fragile and are hard to feed

Rally, Your Aro is nice, Love the finnage!

The rays are lookin' good!

Killerfish: I know a big arowana is pretty pricey, but I dont care, I'll do what it takes to get this fish.

50% isnt that bad when you have help and plenty of buckets.

I have never done a sump, but I hear itsa quite easy. If I built a sump, would I have to do a less % of water changes, say... 20% every sunday?

I do 50% every sunday with my other tanks, so it would be easyer if I could do the ray/aro tank the same day I do the others.

As far as changing water, there is no way to tell how much you need to do until you start testing. When your nitrates indicate a high level, it's time to change water. Eventually you'll figure out what the correct amount is from testing.

No filter (besides plants) will replace water changes. The filters job is to convert ammonia into a less toxic compound (nitrate) which is what you're removing (along with other DOCs) with water changes.

I dont think Im going to put the bogwood in there, Im going to let the rays have as much bottom space as possible.

The sump idea kinf of scares me. I dont want to build it wrong or some other thing. I'm just paranoid about everything. I freak out when my water temp changes by one degree or if I put my hand to the glass and it feels a little cold/too hot I flip!

:nilly:

sumps also add more water to the system so you'll have more stable parameters and it will take more for the temperature to fluctuate.

You should go to someone or somewhere that has a wet/dry and study it/ask questions. They're VERY simple once you see them in action. Just remember, water flows downhill

My LFS doesnt even use sumps... and only one of my friends has fish and he runs a canister filter, but even if he did run a sump, I wouldnt study his because he's not very good at cleaning tanks. He kept two oscars in a 35 gallon and never cleaned it. His fish got HITH and Ick, it was so sad.

Wouldnt I need a certain size sump for a 180, and then a larger one for the 300? I think it would be easyer for me to use two rena xp's.

I dont know though. I'm only 14, and if I do build a sump, Im going to have to pay for it and build it by myself. I have 900 dollars to buy a tank, proper filtration, lighting, and substrate for the tank. I still dont even have the money yet.
