STINKY water from new tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have 2 tanks that turned a cloudy white... turtle tank a 45gallon half full with a colored gravel substate. 11 red eared sliders about 1-2" and about 10 small rosy reds. i am useing an internal filter rated for 10-20 gallons. the water cleared alittle after a 50% water change.
but the other tank is a 47 hex with a aqua clear 50 on it with sand substate 1 blue gourami, 1 2.5-3" oscar and a 3.5-4" irredecent shark. i did a 30% water change and its still cloudy.
my buddy has a 75 gallon tank the same way.. white cloudy. he did many water changes. then decided to do big water changes like 80%, twice. now he is getting a fish smell like dead fish on the river.. i dont know his tank well but he has many small red devils and a few others.. gravel substrate.

all tanks have been running for some time now with out problems, till now..

your a straight up *******

nobody wants to heard your know it all answers, as your just out to make yourself feel better by demoralizing and humilating everyone else that doesent know any better.

few people here dont have an education in bio, thats why they "learn" it from other people and or experience

be nice with your answers pleeeease????

your personal attacks are not needed.

I would have had no problems helping him out with the correct information, but he came off like a "know-it-all"... which I have no problems with, but unfortunatly he DIDNT know it all and was posting INCORRECT information.

If you do infact know it all, then you can afford the attitude, but he did not and therefore needed to be proven incorrect.

edit- also, I dont have any eductaion in Biology. Infact, it is all self taught with hours spent studying and performing experiments.

a white cloud is a result of a lack of nitrifying bacteria. That cloud you see is a different species of bacteria that is free floating, and can grow about 10 times faster then the nitrifyers you "want/need". there is obviously spikes of Bioload whether from feeding a large load a few times a week, or from an increase in fish. Check your water, AMmonia, Nitrite, and NItrate... also, do you have any airstones?

My advice is to get better filtration, more filtration.

i have a airstone in the turtle tank but none in the hex.. the hex doesnt have many fish but i do know that oscars are messy fish.. so should i cut down on feedind till water clears? the turtle tank is clear again after a water change or 2 but the hex is still cloudy.. should i add an airstone to the hex?

boost up your water changes and add more filtration.

They answer to grey water bacterial blooms is almost always p[artial water change, gravel vac, increase filtration (I like about twice as much as the filter ratings call for), more care in not over feeding, and patience. An airstone or two while it clears doesn't hurt as it increases surface gas exchange (sometimes bacterial blooms lower the O2 content of the water).
