Quality fish means simply health to me. An exceptional fish has good finnage, outstanding coloration, and a fearless disposition. Just MO.

Cool. :)

So, what are the exact characteristics that differentiate 'Royal' saums from regular old saums?

I know they're quality is supposed to be high, so of course their color is better, but I think it's more detailed than that.

Here's what I feel makes up a 'Royal' saum:

-thick saums (whether it's gold or silver) result of feeding

-vibrant color of the pectoral fins (yellow to orange/red) result of feeding and water quality

-color around the face, a sort of base color to their irridescent face pattern
result of lighting
-purples edging to the scales on the forehead
result of lighting

-some color towards the back of the dorsal (base color below the irridescent pattern, and between the rays, should match the extra color of the face i.e. yellow/orange) I don't get this one
.

Of course great water quality and diet will produce vibrant color, but judging by pics around the net, and GT's I've owned, there's more to it than that nomad.

Specifically the color around the face (usually purple or yellow) and the color towards the rear of the dorsal fin.

No lighting can make those colors appear if it's not in the GT's genes to be there.

Take a look at the pics I posted earlier to see what I mean.

I am sure that water quality and diet ARE the reason for the variablity in your pictures.

And the two photos posted by you look different as a result of lighting, without a doubt.

These two, and my avatar, are the same GT.

Check out these circled areas on the other pics I posted.

That yellow coloration behind your GT's eye shows up under flash and tank lighting.

There are plenty of pics of GT's that don't have that quality. It's not your lighting, it's the combination of water quality, diet, and genes. For some GT's, no matter how healhty they are, they just wont develop that patch of yellow.

The area on the dorsal fin, see how yours a slight red 'background' color? I believe that is also a trait that is more pronounced in some gene pools, and not others.

Hey Cohazard, don't be calling my fish "aaaaverage" just because my camera and lighting sucks...lol.
My fish is beautiful...
Alot of us have problems with the term "royal" because like stated before its a gimmick. Thats all it is. Its a way to get you to shell out more money for the "higher quality" specimen instead of what it was like just a few years ago when you simply just picked out the brightest looking specimen of the bunch. Getting real lucky once and a while with a really nice one here and there. Now they want more money for that brighter fish and this is their way of accomplishing that.
If it takes off with Saums then it will take off later with other types of fish and having a "Royal" Convict or a Royal Goldfish won't be a joke anymore.

What I feel is a 'Royal' Saum (decoder's photo):

I personally don't know how you can make a comparison here. The top pic is taken in more natural lighting without a flash. The second looks like it was taken with a flash and maybe a better camera.

First off, you rock dude! lol so does your GT! It's gorgeous.

I know the term has been used as a gimmick, but I like it because I felt that the term could be used to signify saums that displayed the specific characteristics that I was looking for. I've spent a lot of time staring at pics of GT's in LFS's and throughout the net, and I see the differences.

But, aren't higher quality fish already being sold for more, but without flashy names? Goldfish are a perfect example. I love goldfish, but I can't see myself dropping $200 on a ranchu, even if it's japanese bred raised hand selected grade AAA nice lol

But alas, the term has been abused and slapped on fish to have the price increased, without representation of quality. I just don't see the problem with that since we're informed, and would know not to buy those fish if they don't merit the price tag.

My opinion on the whole "Royal" Saum situation is this. It's just a high colored saum fed a good diet with good water quality. Here's my 3 inch female gold saum that i bought for about 5 $ at Petsmart when she was an inch long. She was butt ugly when I got her and now look at her. This picture was taken under normal flourescent tubes from home depot with a 4 year old 3 MP kodak easyshare piece of crap digital camera. I feed her krill daily along with hikari cihlid gold and pretty much anything I can find to feed her. Tailapia and tuna filets, snails, feeder guppies, bits of grocery store shrimp, crab leg, beefheart, brine shrimp etc.

IMO the term royal is a sales gimac but at the same time there could be a differance in the royal and common. In every brood of fish there will be the top 10 best of the best of that brood out of hundreds there will be a few that will grow to max size max color etc...So if a lfs has them labeled royal they may be culled from the stock of gt's right next to them as the better quality ones u have use your better judgement and take the time to really look at what your about to buy and that is what a royal gt is to me.
