Stock ideas for a 55?

My tanks are completely bare to give my bichirs enough room to move around. I was GOING to go into cichlids before I fell in love with bichirs, and from what I remember from my research, they like having all kinds of rocks and piles of stuff all built up for them to hide and make territories in. Can I still pull that off in a bare tank?
Discus huh? Hmmm.... I'd love to get some but I highly doubt I can get my bf talked into them. He wants to go monster all the way - talkin about getting gars and growing them out. He despises my angel tank
I told him when they get big they can eat small feeder fish and he didn't seem impressed

A. Modestus/ Bronze Puffer!
1) Totally Bichir safe. Trust me, I've had one w/ a bichir before
2) Top and Middle Level Swimmer
3) A tad small for a 55G monster, max's out at 4 inches. Aggressive, but won't bother the bottom-dwellers
4) Not Cichlid-aggressive
5) Cool Green/Yellow and White on bottom
6) Only about 30 bucks for a nice specimen.
Eats Krill, Like Bichirs, and will also make people think AWESOME it's so weird!
Leporinus' are also safe from bichirs, but not when they're too small. And they get too big for a 55G. Trust me, I had one bust my old 55G
