Stocking a 300 Gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Rhom is solitary and whether they are aggressive is a hit or miss. They will always try and kill what’s in the tank but will be cautious if what is outside the tank. Because they are such slow growers often people get bored and a captive one will never grow to 18in. If you wan it to have a presence you need to buy a large import at 15in+.

I kept piranha for 18yrs. I now have a 2ft aimara. He tends to be active when I’m in the room. I wouldn’t call him and active swimmer but he isn’t a log either. He is more timid than most aimara but he is aggressive at feeding, follows me in the room and tries to attack my 60lb dog.

A third option could be dorado. I think they can get to 24in and I have seen some insanely aggressive ones.

Dorado are definitely really pretty, and I have no problem housing a fish alone. I had a Red Devil in with my Red wolf for one week. Red Devil was larger than my wolf at the time and my wolf killed it one day when I wasn't home. So housing a single fish isn't new to me.

Then my red wolf has bit me twice trying to eat my hand, so I'm looking for something really fun and really agressive. My red wolf will eat frozen/thawed small rats, then anything live input in the tank. So aggression is something I 100% need. I dont want a shy fish.

Large wolf is probably the best option then. Checks all of those boxes.

Would you consider a big knife like a BGK or Royal Clown? BGK probably fits better than the Royal Clown long term. Watching either of them hunt is pretty fun. The bigger they get the more you see them.

Siniperca are another option I like chautsi. They are more ambush predators though.

I had a clown knife for a short time, but sold it shortly after I got it because it only ever hid, and would never hunt the life food I gave it.

Op said he wasn’t a fan of most cichlids, but yeah, a solo or even a pair of doviis are quite the aggressive predators.

Nope, you’re good. Dovii are on another level than cichlids, practically the black piranha of the cichlids.
