I am in the process of building a plywood/acrylic aquarium for my basement, The final dimensions will be 96x36x30. I currently have a 9-10" silver arowana residing with a pair of 4" severums.

I was given the arowana as a gift, so I rather not get rid of it, although my choices of fish would be much greater if i did not have to worry about the arows large mouth

After searching around this website I have two very different stocking plans.

the first one would be
1 silver arow
3-4 mono peacock bass
1 Red tail cat

The other would be an assortment of large semi Aggresive cichlids such as severums, veija, pike, ect. Along with some oddballs I have long wanted to keep. Bichar, Dats, Gar.

Which of these would you choose? let me hear your opinions

Thanks

Some kind of Gar would be awesome! As well as some kind of knife fish!
I like the idea of having a school of Peacock bass!
Given the size of the tank I would not go with a Red-Tail cat as it wont be able to turn around once fully grown. You could possibly get away with a Tiger Shovelnose cat.
Aro for sure!
As for cichlids go, you could get a Jaguar, Oscar, Flower Horn, Severums.
Being such a big tank you have many options!

I can't wait till it's done and we can check out all the pics!

Thanks for the ideas I will take the advice on the redtail.
I would like to keep it simple (not too overcrowded)

what about:
1 silver arow
1 spotted/shortnose/florida gar
1 NGT datnoid
1 mono peackock bass (Maybe)
1 oscar
2 severums
1 red head veija male
1 pike(johanna)
1 ornate bichar
5-7 schooling fish ??? silver dollars?? i realy like flagtails do they school?
1 catfish
(I will probably thown in 2-3 of all the cichlids and keep my favorite when they grow)

Sound good? I originaly just said wanted to keep it not crowded I guesss I cant contain myself. so many to want......

none of these are set in stone (except the arow) Any other ideas for an impressive tank setup are welcome :)

how about a school of lima shovelnoses?

freshwater barracuda?
gars for sure, some dats. is it going to be planted?

How about

1 Silver Aro
1 Black Aro
1 Jardini
1 Festea
1 Managuense
1 Datnoid
3-4 Clown loaches

Thanks for the replys, How do your limas act are they intresting to watch? do you think they would be a threat to any other fish (large mouth)

Yes the tank will be lightly planted with some java fern/anubias attatched to driftwood I got some great ideas from the gallery

do freshwater baracuda school? i think there awesome but no one seems to keep them in schools. Is there something im missing about them?

finaly I realy like all of the fish PMK suggested but in my experiance with jags/festae/jardini I think they would rip eachother apart even in a large tank and losing a black arow is an expensive mistake

keep the ideas coming

1 Aro
1 TSN
1 Spotted Gar/Florida Gar
1 Royal Clown Knife
1 African Tiger Fish
5-6 Clown Loaches

that's what I'd do

How about just a pair of peacock bass? 450 is almost enough room to breed a good size pair.

Your master list would be overcrowded in my opinion. Remember that a 10" fish has at least 4 times the mass and bioload of a 5" fish.

There are a few 3 to 4 foot fish on that list...

How about a school of red-hook metynnis, 6 or 8 Geophagus daemon, and 3 or 4 lima shovelnose? Maybe a ropefish for occassional interest. The arrowana would be ok with that mix for another year or so also.
