Long time lurker, but now that my 55 gallon aquarium has started to cycle and the plants grow, I'm starting to get very serious about making a final choice on what to put into it.

My goal is to only have 1 fish in the aquarium. I'd like it to be large and bright. The tank itself is mostly square, 2.5 x 2 x 2 feet-ish, give or take a few inches. It's been planted with an amazon sword, anubias and a few other fast growing plants. I realize that these large fish like to redecorate, but I'm okay with that as long as it isn't just completely stripped bare. That's why I picked hardy or fast growing plants. And the driftwood I have is too big for the fish to move.

I've got an eheim 2217 as a filter. pH in my area is 8, but I'm willing to use a CO2 injector to pull it down if its really critical the pH be lower. The only care that's an issue is I sometimes leave for a few weeks at a time and set feeder timers up, so no special diets (like with discus). And I'm not interested in a pair because I don't want to deal with fry (unless they are unlikely to breed).

As much as I like the African cichlid, I really want to do a large amazon or american cichlid or perch. Unless there's an African cichlid that would like a planted tank. I have several wonderful LFSs where I live, so getting my hands on a rare fish is just a matter of waiting for it to come in.

Right now, the fish I'm considering are... an electric blue jack Dempsey. A male green terror (A. rivulatus). Or finally, a female red terror (A. festae). Again, I'm only picking one fish. The green terror is my top pick.

I've had a green terror before, I know what to expect there... but I've never kept a jack dempsey or a red terror before. Any advice on those species would help me narrow it down a bit. I'm also getting mixed info on the female red terror about the 55 being a good size for the fish or not. Since this tank won't be upgraded, I want to be sure I get the right fish to start with. I know the male gets too big, but my understanding is the female will be fine in the 55.

And, I'm perfectly willing to take suggestions for another large, brightly colored fish that would do well in this tank set up by itself. I'm also not really interested in doing oscars. I've had them in the past and while I love them, I'm after something really different this time.

Welcome Raptor! :D Always nice seeing new faces. Unfortunately a 55 with that footprint won't lend itself to what you're looking for. I think you're going to have to be more open to suggestions. All the fish you're considering would outgrow your tank fairly quickly, and probably wreak havoc on your plants in the meantime. I can't think of anything that fits what you're looking for, but there's many here that may help, good luck! :D

white saum is an option, little different from your regular green terror... not sure a fish that gets 12 inch will be happy long term in a square 2ft tho... what about hrp or a wimple piranaha, exodons?

+1

I wouldn't go anything bigger than a firemouth (T. meeki)

what about a cichlosoma ornatum?

Ornatums grow really slow but get freaken huge.

I agree xraycer. Nothing that exceeds 6".

Finally located my tape measure. Exact tank is 30 long, 18 wide, and 24 tall. And like I said, not too worried about it tearing up the tank. I expect it, in fact. The bottom is all eco-complete, so nothing fancy. Low light, fast growing plants that won't mind the damage. If the fish decides to go on a absolute tirade in the tank, I'll just plant more amazon swords and move the other plants to another tank.

Ahh yes, the white saum, the true green terror. If I thought I could get my hands on a tank breed one, I might seriously consider it. I know they are super rare in the pet trade, and I do want to be careful with wild caught with my 8 pH. Picking up a young one, or a mature one that grew up in this area, though and I'd probably consider it.

The last green terror I had, from what I'm learning, was kinda chill for its type. Didn't tear up things, didn't mind the corydoras in his tank... Of course, I had him some 20 years ago before the internet was a thing and there were certainly no books on that species of fish. And long before I knew what I was doing. He got to 8 inches in a 30 gallon tank and was 4 or 5 years old, I think. He was a really stunning fish. Then, ick was introduced through I think some new catfish I added (I think I traded in the cory for a pictus cat) ... But yes, I totally know now that is the wrong tank size. Why I was looking at one again with this larger tank, since the terrors get around 8 inches.. though I've heard of some being 10 inches, but not much beyond that.

The C. Ornatum is a bit on the big side at 10 + inches. Still, neat fish there and I'll have to watch for them. Would love to just see one.

But no to the green terror hu? I know, fish keep growing through their life, but I figured this tank would be able to house it a long time, if not all of its life.

No piranha's. They are illegal where I live (Texas). Too much of a risk of people letting them go into the waterways where they would do a lot of damage.

And passing on the angles as well. Those are going to be put in my 100 gallon that's also in the process of cycling. :). I do admit to loving the altums though. I really want to get my hands on them for the big tank, or at least on some wild colored common angles.

So, firemouth looks to be the biggest fish thus far.

Haha.. did myself in. I was thinking of the blue acara (A. pulcher) as the true green. Now that, I can get my hands on. And, I know there's a new electric blue variety that's available. More peaceful than the green, smaller, and less destructive.

One fish for 55gal. What about bottom dwellers? If u like them... I will say 1 pictus catfish. They don't get too big. :)
