Stocking a 55 with one fish

The specialized diet of the puffer drops them off the list for me. Since I leave occasionally for long periods of time, I need them to be able to live on flake food from a timed feeder. But yes, those are neat fish.

Not really that specialized diet since most of the food for the puffers I mentioned are from the grocery store. Plus once they are grown, they do not require daily feeding. Some seem to be able to be pellet trained. My friend has a humpback that eats pellets but my hairy puffer will not. I took a long time to come around to puffers thinking they were much more difficult than other fish but I find them easier. Only issue is that the ones I mentioned are pretty lazy.

Search the fish in the cryptos genus-sajica,HRP,panamesis,myrnae....maybe a few males or females of each could work

Lazy is okay. It's the problem with me leaving for long periods of time. Unless I was 100% certain it ate dry food from a feeder, I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving it but for a few days. And I don't want to take a chance trying to train a fish to pellets, only to then have to return it because I can't meet its diet needs.

Woot, tank cycled surprisingly fast on me. I'm going to go with the electric blue acra. My LFS says they get them in pretty often and he really likes them because unlike the other electric blue varieties, they are super healthy and not often deformed. He won't even sell the others because of that fact.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, was a big help. Once they get a few in, I'll be getting one.

Good choice on the acara for that 55!

Stay away fom the overly big bulgy eyes... seems to be the only common deformity found in them.
Good choice! Best of luck.

Buggy eyes, got it. And look at him, so cute! Yeap, I want one.
That EB Acara that Jeaninel shows in the pic above is very good quality, if not excellent. Note the complete blue coloring even on the entire forehead which in many specimens is all too often a patchy brown. If my lfs had them that show quality I'd have them instead of Dempseys now,, but yeah,... that's your target quality to aim for. Don't settle for less than that and you will be VERY happy for years! Hopefully 10+. Females are still quite pretty, but for best show for a single fish in your tank... gotta get a male. More solid color and much more flowing fins. (I'm presuming you already know that, bjic)
Good luck. Took me quite a while to get the quality fish I have. It may take you a while too, but it's well worth the wait.
