Stocking a 55 with one fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The problem with the tank is the footprint. The fish only has 30" of swimming length. I agree with the other posters on no fish larger than 6". I also would not recommend pictus cat. Mine is a full 6" long and very active. He uses every bit of the 6 foot length of my 150 gallon.

I love pictus cats, but yeah, they need that swimming room. This tank is really best for a slow moving, broad-bodied fish.

Salvini, wow, look at those. Okay, so that's two on the list... the blue acara and the salvini. Which then lead me to Ellioti. Which is a neat fish too and looks like isn't overly aggressive, but seems to be super rare in the pet trade. Relative of the firemouth, just not nearly as aggressive. To the point that people are successful keeping them with smaller (but not mouth-sized) fish.

No worries, I love catfish too. Pictus are probably my favorite. After that, I really like featherfin squeaker catfish.

And I think that wolf fish gets a might too big for my 55. Though he's pretty freaken cool.

You know, I just need more fish tanks. That's all there is to it.

Have you considered a Nicaragua cichlid? They get 8-10in and are VERY colorful. Some say they will dig up plants but I have had a single one for a couple years that has never dug up anything.

Ever consider a freshwater puffer? You have a great tank for something like a Congo, Hairy or Dragon/Humpback. A lone puffer in a planted tank would be pretty cool.... but they are not the most active of fish, lol
