I thought I was gonna get a 30 gallon, now I'm getting a 55g. So guys, what should I put in there I'm trying to go for the unique/oddball feel. I don't want a species tank or one fish tank. I'm planning on planting it with a sand substrate and maybe putting some sea shells in for looks (good idea or not?).

I would be especially happy if I wouldn't have to feed them live foods. Although if the fish is cool enough I'm willing to make exceptions

well a couple of things first.....

1. are you into fish from a specific continent? (south america, north america, asia, africa, australia, etc.) or do you want a mixed continent fish tank?

2. are you looking for something(s) to live in a 55 for life, or are you looking/willing to upgrade?

let's start with you answering these questions that way i (and other MFKers can narrow down the fish that you would like/could have.)

Sounds like a plan, thanks

I don't care where the fish is from

I want it to live in the 55 for life.

Well, I want multiple fish in the tank, as long as it doesn't hurt/kill its tankmates its ok (if that made any sense/helped at all)

If you consider anglelfish oddball...they work too. And they definitely don't need live food all the time...

I was thinking about that. Do you guys think I could get like 3 rope fish along with other things. Are there any spiny eels, like peacock eels that I could put in it?

yes it did........... haha this is the first time i've tried to narrow fish down with someone haha but i think its working.

you could do some hujeta gars, ctenolucius hujeta, they are get about 10-12" and grow very slow, they do not need feeders but some may only accept feeders. (i was lucky mine loves freeze dried krill) but that would also need their tankmates would have to not be able to fit in their mouths but not be able to eat the hujetas

a good catfish that could go with hujetas or be another fish for you (maybe) is the striped rafael catfish, platydoras costatus, they get about 8"

alot of the geophagus species can survive in a 55 for life

if you want a peaceful oddball tank you could do very unique cory cats like pandas, sterbai, arcuatus, metae, haraldschultzi, etc. you can also do dwarf cichlids like rams, apistogrammas, kribensis. also there are some unique tetras, like the blind cave tetra (not at all colorful, but IMO very unique how it has evolved to have no eyes because they were not necessary), a large school of cardinal tetras makes some people (including me) go "WOW!", and my favorite rummy nose tetras they're cool little tetras, but then there's the amazing Poecilocharax weitzmani, a rare tetra. there's also some cool pencilfish out there.

there also are elephant noses, gnathonemus petersii, that get about 8 inches and from what i hear are peaceful,

african butterfly fish, pantodon buchholzi that get about 4 inches and stay at the top of the tank just under the water line, can be predatory

south american leaf fish, monocirrhus polyacanthus, gets about 4 inches and is predatory

asain needle fish or just "needle fish", xenentodon cancila, gets about a foot long, is predatory, could be housed in a 55 gal for most if not all of its life.

halfbeaks, nomorhamphus liemi, gets about 4 inches long, can be predatory.

leaf fish or african bush fish, ctenopoma acutirostre can get about 6 inches, predatory

other bush fish, of the species ctenopoma, predatory

pike cichlid, crenicichla sp., predatory, can get to about 10 inches

pike cichlid, crenicichla lepidota, predatory, can get to about 8 inches

green terrors, aequidens sp. "gold saum", predatory, can be agressive, gets to about 7 inches

severums, heros severus, peaceful, can get to 8 inches,

flowerhorns are also another choice

this is just a few of what could possibly be kept in a 55 gal for most if not all of the fish's life.

there are more, do some research online to get more information.
either google a fish or go to an online store (like thatpetplace.com, petsolutions.com, or liveaquaria.com to get the maximum length of a fish.. typically you would not want fish longer than 10" but could get fish that can get to be 12" as a typical 55 gal is about 13" wide........

hoped this helped:):D:ROFL:
