Stocking a 55g oddball(ish) tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Right heres an idea:

1 x Peacock Spiny Eel
2 x Banjo Catfish
12 x Blind Cave Tetras
1 x Black Ghost Knife Fish

Or an invisible tank would be cool in there:

12 x Glass Catfish
18 x Glass Fish
6 x X-Ray Tetras

=]] In a planted tank those two tanks would work.

If you consider a Oscar or a Jaguar Cichlid Oddball 1 of those in the tank would also work on its own...You coupld possibly get away with a black shark in the oscar tank too but jag is too agressive. =]]

I think I've decided on getting the eels, polypterus and rope fish, could you guy give any more info on those, and also I now realize the fish I chose are bottom dwellers so can you think of any mid-level/surface fish that won't get eaten?

rainbow fish of the larger species

I say you should definitely get some colorful schooling fish, like Neon Tetras to build the foundation.
Those aren't oddballs though, and would become food for any predatory fish he may get.

I also like the idea of a polypterid. A few ropefish would be cool, but you could also do one or 2 small bichirs like Senegals or delhezi. I have an albino senegal and it is one of my favorite fish I've kept. He's still small, but he isn't shy and eats like a pig (anything from flakes to pellets to krill to earthworms). Right now I have my fish in a mixed-continent tank, but when I have more room, I'd like to move my bichirs into an all-African oddball tank.
I think a setup with something like:
1 or 2X small bichir species for the bottom
1 or 2X African butterfly for the top (I've heard some of these guys may only eat live insects though)
1X some medium sized ctempoma species
6-8X larger African tetras (congos, yellow tails, blood caps, etc) for color/ movement
or maybe an elephant nose or baby whale instead of a second bichir
...would be a sweet tank

I just had an Idea, would hatchet fish be good and not get eaten?

Depends on what else is in the tank. Unless you get something with a pretty big mouth, larger hatchets like silvers should be ok.

Ok, what about maybe some great Danios?

Any more ideas guys?

Leopard bushfish? They grow to 15cm and are semi-agressive so they would be ok in that tank. One of the oddest fish around...South American Leaf Fish they grow to 10 cm and are semi-agressive too! Some wrestling halfbeaks may be OK but may get eaten as they only grow to 6cm(I think).Maybe some mottled Ctenopoma would be ok but these are rare to find in captivity. You could also keep a few synodontis altough they dont look odballish they way they swim is...Upside down!In a lfs they may also be listed as cuckoo or upsidedown catfish. If I manage to think of any more I will let you know.

PS I totally agree on a smaller bichir I'm getting one too..If i can get one LOL
