Stocking a 60gal: questions and suggestions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't keep peacocks with mbuna anymore. I did that once and lost a pair of Sunshine peacocks a few days after they were added. Stupid rat bastard red zebra. 2 dollar fish kills a 60 dollar pair.

Sweet!! Thanks for the replies!

So over 30 fish in a 60 gal (227 litres) is not all that uncommon? Thats awesome!! I know overcrowding does help with aggression, I just didnt know what point the number of fish in a tank is considered enough.

Thats awesome.. what species do you have and what size are they?

I will show when its all done. I look forward to seeing pics of your tanks.

I would love anymore input anyone else has.

Thanks for all the help!
Here a list of the species I have. Cynoyilapia "lion's cove", "mbamba mpanga", "londo"; Labeotropheus fuelleborni; Labidochromis "caeruleus", "maleri blue", "zebra gold"; Melanochromis "auratus", "johannii", "maingano", "joanjohnsonae"; Metriaclima "mbembe deep", "black dorsal", "zebra chilumba", "callainos", "greshakei", "zebra gold kwanga", "hajomaylandi"; Petrotilapia yellow chin; Pseudotropheus "daktari", "elongatus chailosi", "elongatus chwere", "zebra gold", " saulosi", "zebra long pelvic chesese", "elongatus mpanga", "socolofi", " zebra long pelvic galireya reef", " zebra blue galireya reef";Tropheops red cheek; Tropeus sp black; Cyrtocara moorii; Nimbochromis " venestus", " livingstonii"; Placidochromis " solo", "milomo"; Copidochromis trimaculatus. I need to set up a huge tank where I can put them all in together. :naughty: :woot: :headbang2 :clap  :mwave:

Here is my tank so far.. I am still going to add more stuff to it. I got some anubias, java ferns, vals and 4 cobolt blue zebras.

I used egg crate under the substrate and tied the planted plants to it. The larger anubias are potted.

Personally I like fewer fish. Your choices are good, but I'd go with 2 groups of 6 fishes maybe.

Just cause you can stock it with dozens of fish doesn't mean you need to.

Cheers!

Good point Andrew. I too am leaning toward a less crowded tank but we will see.. I think I am getting sick with the african cichlid bug. We will see.

Tank looks great. There is a 4500litre tank here in my home town, George South Africa, and the chap has around 150+ fish in it. All sizes as some of the fish have breed. When a person walks into the room and you see the tank it has you spell bound. There is so much life in that tank. My main supplier recently visited the lake and he tells me when diving you see masses of fish all swimming together. A fuller tank will get greater attention, but, ultimately the decision is yours to make.. :naughty: :clap :headbang2

That is an awesome tank, and African cichlids can be cool and more intresting, you just go to find the intresting fish! =)

A point of interest. I initially had my rocks running the entire length of my tank but then changed the formation to a stack at each end with some open swimming area between. The fish seem to prefer the way the tanks are setup now. A really dominant male, like my greshakei, tried to control the entire reef whereas he now has one area on the one side of the tank that he rules. Those that dare to venture near his hole get the treatment.
Before you realise it you will have added some more fish toyour tank. When you see some really great fish you will more than l;ikely buy to add to your collection. If and when doing so remember to add at least 3-4 fish at a time otherwise those in the tank will stress the new fish to death.
 :naughty: :woot: :clap :headbang2 :clap

that tank looks great so far. just needs more fish and rocks but it is on its way to being a great tank. imo african tanks are the best looking out there. they are just so active and have tons of color
