Hey guys, here's the quick rundown. I'm transferring my Cutteri cichlids and giant danios from my 75 gallon into their own 37 gallon. At that point my 75 gallon will only have my striped raph and gibbiceps pleco in it and being the catfish addict I am I figured it'd be the perfect opportunity to set up an all (or at least primarily) catfish tank. I'm more into the larger, more "sassy" catfish than smaller ones such as Corydoras. I was just at my LFS before and am very good friends with the owner, he's a big catfish fan as well and has kept about every species I can think of. At first I thought some of his info was false but he's very well respected in my reputable local fish club (GPASI) and has written various articles in fish keeping magazines (several on cats) and written a few books on the hobby.

So what to stock it with. I'm nearly certain of at least one fish I'll be getting: a Bagroides macracanthus they have in the shop about 5.5-6" at $47. Another catfish I think I may get (this is as a GROWOUT, please don't think I'll be keeping it in a 75 for life, I'm not THAT stupid :D) is a giraffe cat. The owner of the same shop said he gets them in often at about 3.5-4" since they're popular in his shop. I've heard a few things say they grow incredibly fast but most people in my local fish club who've kept them and he both stated that they grew quite slow for them. My plan would be to grow the giraffe out to 10-12" then sell it back to him (he said he'd pay good money for a sizable one and he would definitely buy it back off of me), either that or convince my parents to let me get an indoor pond :).

With a striped raph, a gibbiceps (will be transferred to another tank at 10"), a black lancer, and a giraffe (will be sold or transferred at 10-12") I'm sure I'm pretty well stocked but would I have any room at all left for maybe some active mid or top level fish so there's something moving during lights on?

Thanks for the feedback guys, hope this tank turns out awesome :headbang2

Heres the tank specs if you're wondering:

volume: 75 US gallons
dimensions: 48" long by 18" width by 20" height
lighting: 3:00 PM - 9:00 PM
aeration: whisper 50
filtration: Fluval 406 canister (rated for 100 gal with 386 gph)
substrate: loose gravel
temperature: 75-76 F
ph: 7.6
Water changes: weekly 40-50%

Anybody have any input: am I overstocked, have room for more, etc?

That sounds like its going to be sweet! The giraffe cat wont last long at all. They grow really fast. You could have a convict or thoricthys of some sort for a little mid level action. Good luck!

What'd be the growout time frame?

I do plan on possibly making an indoor pond for monster cats and could put the giraffe in that but it'd be a while until I can, are there any cats that are VERY similar to giraffes in appearance, personality, feeding patterns, ability to handfeed, 24/7 vacuum cleaner, etcetera. Has anyone kept Auchenoglanis ngamensis?

Ok as of now here's my plan: I'm going to get a giraffe and grow it out (regardless of time frame) then either sell it back to the guy for decent money or convince my parents to let me get an indoor pond in out basement. It shouldn't be difficult since giraffe cats are my mom's all time favorite fish (well tied with gibbiceps plecos).

So the stock would be:

6 Giant Danios (I'll leave them in for top water movement)
1 Striped Raph
1 Black Lancer
1 Gibbiceps Pleco (L083/L165) (growout until 12")
1 Giraffe Catfish (growout until 12")

Is gravel going to be OK with a giraffe (or any Auchnoglanis, Parauchenoglanis, similar genus species)?

I'm sure somebody other than just Dan has some input as well, maybe some catfish experts...

Alright well I did more research and solved my own dilemma so here's what I'm going with for a stock:

6 giant danios
1 striped raph
1 gibbiceps pleco
1 black lancer
either 1 Parauchenoglanis ngamensis (zambezi grunter) OR 1 Parauchenoglanis macrostoma (dwarf giraffe catfish)

If anybody has any experience with the last two please feel free to give me any advice or tips on them as there's not a vast amount of information on the internet for either (especially the P. ngamensis) so I'd like to know the true average max size of each since PC and SC have conflicting size info.

I assume I'd be fully stocked at this point, correct? If not would I have room for another cat (I'm doubting I'd have any more room though)?
