i will be moving to west virgina very soon. i only have a 55 right now, but if my uncle gives it up i will also have a 240. i have decided not to risk moving my fish that far and i have found a new home for them here, so my question is, what kind of sa/ca cichlid could i house for life in my 55. im looking for something rather aggressive and great colors. i was thinking a jag, would one be ok in a 55?

i think a jag would be fine in a 55 but you could also get about 4 convicts
they breed very easily and they have been known to beat up Oscars, Jack Dempseys, Green Terrors, Red Devils and other huge "tough" fish about 3 times there size they grow to about 6 inches max and they have very nice color

A jag gets way too big for a 55. If you want cichlids, stick to something like jack dempseys, salvini, or convicts (or any similar size fish, doesn't have to be those common species)

:iagree:

A single jag would need at least a 125 and would probably be better in a bigger tank if you are planning to have other fish also. And I don't blame you for not wanting the convicts.

Yes, you could keep a green terror in a 55 minimum if it was alone. Adding other fish would be problematic in a 55 because they would need to be as big or bigger than the GT.

Surely you are not agreeing with the jag in a 55 part??? He specifically states "for life". It **might** be ok if it was a female, but if you are buying a juvenile, how will you know??? I can't recommend putting a beefy 16" aggressive fish in a 12-inch wide tank.

ya the Jag in the 55 is a no go, if you want nasty then try a Midas or a Red Terror they should be OK in a 55...
