Stocking for a 100 gallon tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think this is probably an overestimation... They rarely get to more than 15"; the largest I have seen were the ones at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, and they looked to be just short of 16".

A. ocellatus examples have been reported to grow to about 45 cm (18 in) in length and 1.6 kilograms (3.5 lb) in weight.[1] The wild-caught forms of the species are typically darkly coloured with orange-ringed spots or ocelli on the caudal peduncle and on the dorsal fin.[5] These ocelli have been suggested to function to limit fin-nipping by piranha (Serrasalmus spp.), which co-occur with A. ocellatus in its natural environment.[7][9] The species is also able to rapidly alter its colouration, a trait which facilitates ritualised territorial and combat behaviours amongst conspecifics.[10] Juvenile oscars have a different colouration from adults, and are striped with white and orange wavy bands and have spotted heads.[7]

In the wild, yes. In a home aquarium, doubt it. Show pics next to a tape measurer or something. Not saying your a liar but I want physical proof.

Probably not 19 inch. But I would not blame him. When I got my 14 inch Oscar i thought it was 16 incher. Sometimes there thick bodies make them look longer.

there are oscars that are 18 inches. Dont believe everything you read in books and bogus sites. They dont hit large sizes in aquariums because, one, no fish will. 2nd oscars are usually traded in or killed off by people who cant house them properly and they die from disease

Ok thanks. Like I said I don't think your lying I just want to see them. That would by far be the biggest Oscar I've personally ever seen...

What they fail to mention is that this is the world record size of a fish caught in the wild ( http://www.landbigfish.com/fish/fish.cfm?ID=146 ). I don't believe anything close to this size is attainable in captivity (let alone over that size). It's the same way with multiple species kept in captivity, for example, for the silver arowana, the record is 47", whereas the largest I've heard of in captivity was more like 38".

Ask him to include a tape measure :grinno:

While the Oscars may or may not get 19", the plecos definitely have the potenial to outgrow that tank.
