Stocking help for 3 tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I think I am leaning towards idea #1. I have a few questions about these setups though.

If I keep the severums with the keyholes, there is a chance the keyholes will become quite timid. Would I have room to add dither fish to the tank with the severums, keyholes and geos all taking up bioload space? And should I add cories to the 125 or would it be redundant to add more sand sifters when I will already have 6 large sifters?

Is there a good dither fish native to the waters Honduran red points inhabit that would make them feel comfortable enough to breed?

Are cories a good idea with breeding angelfish? I intend to have several tall broad leaf fake plants in their tank to lay eggs on as well as some shale or tall flower pots. Will the angels be able to defend their eggs from 8 cories?

Idea #1:
-125:
2 turquoise severum *
4 keyhole cichlids *
6 geopahgus red head tapajos
1 spotted hi fin pleco *

-55:
4-6 honduran red points (will remove two if I end up with 2 breeding pairs)
Want dithers

-55:
6 angelfish (2 breeding pairs and a couple singles/can remove the singles if things get too tense) *
8 sterbai Cory catfish (considering removing if a threat to angel eggs)

If you end up breeding the tapajos I'd be happy to buy some from you if you plan to sell in the future.

Anyone?

So I was talking with my friend who keeps a lot of African cichlids last night and we got to talking about stocking options. He brought up how my stocking idea has the potential for 5 different species breeding with the potential for over 10 breeding pairs of fish. That is simply too much for me to handle in both time and space.

So I have changed my idea again to limit my breeding pairs down to no more than 3 and to eliminate the need for more tanks.

If I were to rehome 2 keyholes and only have 4 angels, could I keep a severum in the 125?

Idea #1 revised:
-125:
4 keyhole cichlids (if a pair forms, I will sell the pair) *
4-6 angelfish (all singles)
6 geopahgus red head
1 spotted hi fin pleco *

-55:
Breeding tank for a pair of geos

-55:
4 angelfish (2 breeding pairs) *

I intend to let the geo parents raise their own young as I have read very good things about their parenting. There will also be two 20 highs for angelfish fry as I realize they are notoriously poor parents more often than not.

I would love to still hang onto 1-2 of my turquoise severums even though I will not be breeding any. Could 1 severum exist peacefully with the below stock list or will I need to remove some fish?

4 keyhole cichlids (if a pair forms, I will sell the pair) *
4 angelfish (all singles) *
6 geopahgus red head
1 spotted hi fin pleco *

If I end up with a pair of geos, the 125 will only have 4. I would be willing to rehome up to 2 of the keyholes and since I will already have a breeding tank of angels, I could completely remove them from the 125 stock list if necessary.

I know there is room for at least one severum if I do some to all of this. I mainly worry about compatibility and keeping aggression to a minimum.

To be honest, you wont have control over whether the angels are singles or not! With 4-6 of them chances are you will get a couple pairs...just be prepared to shake things up! I think you easily could put your severums in the 120 with that stock.

Think just one or two severums can work here?

I will have my 55 with 2 breeding pairs of angels and that is enough for me. LOL I bought 24 pea sized baby angels and have them growing out in a 20 now. They are hardy little guys. I got them from AngelfishUSA just a few hours away from here. Growing like weeds! LOL Only had them for a little over two weeks now and they have almost doubled in size. I plan to move them to a 55 here in about a month when they hit around nickel size. Then I should see pairs forming in 5-7 months. I will keep the two pairs I like the best and sell any other pairs. Then hopefully I will have some singles I like left over to place in the 125. But like I said, I will have my breeding pairs, so I won't be heartbroken if I don't have any to move to the 125. I know they do best in groups, so if I don't have at least 4 to move over, I will scrap the idea.
