stocking koi in aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That would work. It would look a lot nicer too. The only problem would be insulating/heating it, but they do make pond heaters for outdoor ponds. As long as the garage is insulated, it shouldn't be hard to keep the water from freezing

well id probably do a small space heater to keep the garage up at a decent temperature, then i wouldnt have to worry about the pond freezing over. im thinking a good size would be 15x6x4 ft. it seems that 4 feet is the favored depth in ponds......

Some of the koi articles that I have read in the past state for every 100 gallons of water you can have up to 12 inches of koi. So you can have one 12 inch koi, or three 4 inch koi. If you have a great filter system you would probably be able to handle more. The key is clean water.

would a pond heater work for a concrete pond? i mean its not very insulated.

don't worry about heating it. The initial price isn't too expensive, but the cost of running would be very high. When you heat the pond, you have to heat the water, when you us a space heater, you have to heat the water and ambient air. At any decent pond retailer you can get a floating deicer (some even run off batteries) that keep a hole open to allow for gas exchange.

The only time you would need a heater is if you find your pond is freezing all the way down. A good safe bet for most north america is 5 feet, but you could probably get away with 4. As long as you don't turn them into Koi-Cicles, they will live.
When water temps get that low, koi start to hibernate and you won't have to feed them (what little nutrition they need they can get from micros floating in the water). The hole just allows for gas exchange. If you want overkill, you can added a bubbler (just make sure the line doesn't freeze) so drive off excess CO2.

i wouldnt need a pond heater in the case of using a space heater. im not sure i might just stick with my stock tub pond...... to be determined with time.

I got ya there, I was just trying to show the increasing scale of inefficiency.

well i wouldnt have to worry much about insulation with a space heater and i can ge the tub off the concrete using wood, at the school i went to we put a 300 gallon tub on concrete blocks and it held it up but i doubt the same for something between 500 and 700 gallons would be held by that. i may do shubunkins in that aquarium, since they are a fan favorite and dont get as big but are just as colorful, maybe that would be the better choice, but well see, ill have to discuss it with my supervisor lol.
