Texas is in North America...
yeah but what im saying is that they originated in central and then migrated north into texas, and are still commonly referred to as central American not natives (at least IMO), if your giving someone advice on this fish it would be grouped with advice about centrals not natives but this is really off topic from the thread

I was just offering info. There is a lot of grey area as to what regions encapsulate Central america. I still sometimes forget that Festae are from south america and Cyano "tex" are native to north america...

i would recommend a fh and a midas or rd, i am currently keeping them together in my tank and all is well. If you end up with a male rd and female fh there is a good chance of them breeding if kept under the correct conditions. However when keeping any 2 bruiser or aggressive type fish i would highly recommend that you have a divider handy at all times and this is vital because these fish are very powerful and can inflict massive damage on each other.

is your FH grown? many FH can be kept with tankmates without issues until they mature which is when the killing spree starts, its very rare for a FH to be kept with tankmates as adults, but like everyone is saying it realy depends on the individual fish, OP i would go and get several small specimens of the different fish you want to keep and then just rehome them as they grow and you pick out your favorites or get rid of the troublemakers

That is my game plan so far. Get a good few, see what happens, and weed them out as I need to. As of now, I am planning on going with texas, trimac, and midas should the LFS be able to get these in. From the sound of it, I don't think they'll have any trouble. Sounded like the store usually carried texas and midas. If they don't, I know Petsmart does and they are not too far off either. South Dakota is just kind of barren of good private owned fish stores.

In thinking of other fish that could go in with besides cichlids, would silver dollars survive in this crew of fish, or what catfish and plecos could hang with them too?

yeah they may not be able to get in pure trimacs, those are pretty hard to come by unless you order them directly from a reputable breeder, usually the "trimacs" that pet stores get in are just low grade flowerhorns but you can try and ask, they may surprise you, but yeah the smaller you get them together the better your chances and you may want to get a couple of each to ensure that you can get all males

That's what I am thinking too, the all males part. As much fun as I would have breeding them, I just want this to be a good display tank. I figure maybe 3-4 of each and then when they all start getting bigger that I can sex them, I'll go from there.

I would almost rather get flowerhorns anyway, but from what everyone is telling me it's inevitable that disaster will happen.

Well... I brought back some kids. I found 2 texas about 2", that look like they are of the carpintis "escondido" strain. I also have 7 little salvini that are between barely an inch long to 2". Then I bought 2 royal plecos for the cleaning crew. So far I am going to leave it as is and not bother with Midas unless I can find some piebald. I will probably narrow down the salvini a bit too down the road and not keep all 7. I may try breeding a couple as I think I have a pair allready. But that is where this is at so far.

On a water note I brought a sample with me to have tested and the water pH came back at about 8.3. That is pretty high from what I was told for centrals. I have had some friends in the hobby tell me the fish should be fine in that, and I have had others tell me to balance out the pH first. In the mean time I have all the fish in a quarintine tank until I get the pH balanced or find out the best way to handle this. I am slowly adding a bit of the tank water to the quarintine tank to help the fish get acclamated.

Here is the set up of my tank. I have some big stones in the tank that I found in a friend's field and I just washed them off and dropped them in the tank. The fish guy at the LFS said the rocks are probably limestone as most the rock around the area are made of limestone, and if it is limestone, that is probably the cause of the high pH. I bought some pH adjuster that is suppose to drop it to an even 7.0 and dropped it in last night. So far there is no change. In the pH test kit I bought it is reading at 7.6 or so. Now I think that is all the higher the kit tests for so maybe that is all it will read and it is actually higher still. I bought some driftwood that I am putting in tonight and I guess that will help dropp the pH as well and balance it out.

Let me know your thoughts on this pH situation, if the fish will/should be okay or not and steps to balance the water.
