I don't see a pair of 5-6" aggressive cichlids suiting for a 40 gallon for life.

And it does depend on the fish. My FM is completely peaceful (lives with tetras).

one thing to remember is a 40 breeder is more than 40 gal of water and has a nice wide foot print imo they are better than a 55 gal tank for most fish i know alot of people that use 40 b for the same fish they would keep in a 55 with good results

ive also kept them in a 10g.
trust me, for a 40L, 40T, 40, or 40B, they will be fine.

one of my tanks is a 40B. you are correct.
what im saying is, a shoal of this species will work in any 40g tank, regardless of the footprint.
well, maybe with the exception of a 40C
