So getting a new tank tomorrow.
300gal tank with a 4ft sump (95ish gal sump) . I have kept aggresive community tanks befor, funnly the only problem was a salvini.

Stock will be
One of each Jag, Oscar, JD, GT and some smaller diethers.

I am think of putting a Red Devil (never had befor) festa or texas.

So what of the extra 3 do you guys think i should go with? I want all males other than if I get a festa I think the girls look better.

There will be some drift wood, sand substract and hopefull a few live plants will survie in there lol.

Better add i will be getting ir fish at the same time as small juvies 4cm

IMPO your 1st list would be right at about perfect with the gallonage each takes as far as territory goes "full grown". 300 gallons is a good bit of space so you might be able to get away with having a sissy oscar in the mix.

Out of that list I'd say festae. RD or Texas is another big fast growing fish with a bad attitude don't know if you would be able to keep the carnage down with one of those trouble makers in the mix.

Concerns: jag & oscar growth rate compared to the GT/JD/Festae. Festae grow slow, JD/GT grow fast till 6" mark then growth rate falls off the cliff.
 
Growth rate of Festae is an issue and I want a girl (think there look bette) I found a great male jag at a lfs only issue is he would be a little bigger than the res 1/2 inch but his colour and patteren is amazing.

Need to cycle this tank asap and reserve him next week.

My festae grew pretty slow when i had them. I think my female was almost 7" after 2-3ish years. The male was a few inches bigger. Hands down one of the best cichlids I've ever kept and best looking. Once the male hit 8" he became a bastard and eventually ended up killing the female once they spawned, which is common. Your original list should suit that tank just fine. I myself am not to big on oscars, but to each their own i guess. So with that being said, I vote festae.
 
Yeah im leaning towords a festea, last one I had made it to about 5inches than I got sold it cause my Jags started to breed so he count stay.

So far ive been lucky with cichlids never had an agro issue other than a bastard salvini that took eveything one no matter the size differance. It was funny thoe even my jag x2 his size wad scared of it.

Got the Tank fyi if u buy a glass tank this big or bigger get at least 6 ppl. Will be setting up this week adding water by friday. Should I use insta cycle and get fish in 4 days after water?

I had a similar stock in my 300 when I first set it up. Female Festae eventually got a male and we moved most of the other cichlids out so we didn't have to referee so much. Breeding shrinks an 8' tank really quickly.

As long as you dont have spawning going on its worth a try. Oscar may get bullied by the centrals so watch out for it. Big jags can be jerks ..

I think the jag could be a big problem. If it is a male jag then it will probably kill almost all the other cichlids... And i know that people make fun of oscars but to be honest they can and will bully other fish... I would say get the GT JD and ALL the other SLOW growing fish first and once they all hit around 5-6 inches THEN add the fast growers such as the oscar or jag... That way there will not be such a HUGE difference in size once the fast growers grow up... Get what i am saying???

I would purchase the festa at a larger size to because they grow so PAINFULLY S-L-O-W!!! If you buy all the fish at the same size in about a year your oscar will have grown 10 inches+ and your festa will only be MAYBE 2-3 inches bigger.... A very easy target for a jaguar or oscar! Remember... They are CICHLILDS! They can and WILL attack or eat or try to eat ANYTHING they can or they think they can overpower!
