Stonefish pics

Could really do with some better pics (without water spots or reflections) to get a full on ID. There are quite a few that look almost identical. I have an Allenbatrachus grunniens (aka grunting toadfish) and he has been in total fresh with me for 2½ years and is doing great (plus whatever time he had been in fresh before I got him). I did have a pair in the tank which spawned but sadly the female died during the spawn.

Indeed once they stop feeding it's hard to make them start again. They are reasonably timid too, and like to feel safe and secure.

No none of your other fish will like brackish conditions and will die shortly, the toadfish is living because they are found in esturies and therefore salinities fluctuate and sometimes they are found in fw areas and sometimes full salt. Bit of a blase attitude, but I guess it's a situation some people find themselves in when they don't know what they are buying.

:iagree:

that room looks cool! i'd probably get bored with the stone fish's inactivity but its definitely an interesting addition to the tank.

I have one and it has been a bit of a nusiance to have at time but I have really enjoyed him though b/c he is an oddball fish. I would first off get him in a brackish tank. I kept mine in freshwater for awhile then it stopped eating and I was told to change it to brackish and he continued eating a few weeks later. They can get to be about a foot long. The only thing mine will eat is ghost shrimp and feeders. Be very careful about the fish you have with him mine has eaten 2 needlenose gar, an archer, and a moray. I thought the moray and the archer were plenty big but I was wrong so be very careful about that. Good luck with your new fish!!

I really like these, but too tough to keep in a community setting.

Awesome fish and awesome room man!! I'm not sure about the water conditions, but I do know as others said be careful for the tank mates. They can eat things pretty damn big from what I understand. Definitely an ambush predator. Very cool!!!

Also known as Freshwater Lionfish, I find them very hard to feed. I had one for a month. I don't think it was eating.

A lot of people have trouble keeping them alive even in brackish.. I hope they do good for you. Oh and they are poisonous as well so be careful handling them.

I didn't have a problem at all with one I bought in Texas, extremely hardy. However, bought one from tfdfish.com and it died in like a month. I don't even know why. I think it had a lot to do with the breeders on the other side of each vendor although those aren't the only fish that died on my orders with tfdfish.... Maybe I just had a bad experience with them.
