The local Big Al's (they of the "Dinosaur eel" id tag for a bichir tank :screwy:) have a tank of 5-6" stonefish / toadfish. Anyone have experience with them? How big a fish can they eat? (they look like they have pretty big mouths). Would one be ok in a tank with a juvi tiget dat (say 3-4")?

Thanks!

I presume they've got Batrachus trispinosus, the "FW" Stone or toadfish. Not really FW, does better in brackish. They have huge mouths...I dunno if I'd risk the dat, they can kill fish too large to swallow by grabbing their head and suffocating them.

Or with other big BW fish...they get bacterial slime infections really easily in FW...

Depends on the species!
I have two Allenbatrachus grunniens and they do fine in FW.
They eat fish like a Bichir of the same sice would. I love em!

There's also a slight chance that it is Thalassophryne amazonica, which is a freshwater species, although it is usually labeled 'prehistoric monsterfish'

Could it be a Neovespicula depressifrons, commonly sold as the Dusky Panther Goby? Similiar to Bullrout.
I have seen these for sale online through Foster and Smith.
I have researched them a little and they appear to have larval/juvinile stages that are FW tolerent, then they need more brackish, if not total salt at adulthood.
BTW, their dorsal spines are venomous. Very painful results, and/or anaphylaxis.
They are usually a very beautiful fish for someone like us to own.:headbang2

I think it will depend on what you feed it. Feeders will tend to make them a lot more probable to attack....

I have 2 stonies (brackish tank) about 5inches in with a silver day that can't be more than 2 1/2 inches and it's been with them for close to year. But they know that every couple days a magic stick will randomly appear in front of them yielding a big piece of shrimp.....

From my experience as soon as they have been off live for a few weeks I wouldn't hesitate in the least to house them together (the sizes I was speaking of).......esp your situation... I highly doubt a dat that size is gonna be even thought of as food.....Unless maybe you starved the stonies for weeks.

paullywolly i have two that are about 2 to 3 inches long and i think that if i was to put a medium size datniode in with them it would not be a problem . Plus the toadfish eat at night an the datniode will eat during the day .

ok thanks guys. I passed on the stones (haha no pun intended!) and they're no longer at the store - I'll keep my eye out for them in the future. Very cool looking lurkers!
