Except doesn't heroin give you intense rushes of euphoria? It's still stupid to start, but I kind of understand why someone would want to experience that. And then there's the physical dependence you can develop to heroin to the point of dying if you stop taking it.

From what I've read in books, smoking gives you a lightheaded, dizzy feeling. I don't get why someone would start. Unless I'm missing something, since I've never actually smoked, and every time I pass by someone on the street who's smoking, the smell alone makes me feel ill and breathing in any of the secondhand stuff makes me cough like crazy.

My point is that people do stupid things for things that feel good: drug use, unprotected sex, daredevil stunts, etc. I even understand why someone would develop a dependence on alcohol, since it makes you feel all giddy. But why smoking? Is there some pleasure in smoking that I am not aware of?

good for u. wish my parents kept me in a bubble lol. i guess ur the smart one. good on u. dont start lol.

I don't think you're understanding my point. This isn't an anti-drug rant. All I'm saying is that if I have a choice between two things which are going to damage my body, most likely permanently, then I'm going to choose the one which gives me a euphoric rush.

If I wanted to inhale smoke all day long I'd be a fireman.

the reason I started was because I would be stressed/pissed at work and lighting up a cig would instantly calm me down and change the way I was thinking. (this was before I was addicted) I think thats why people start, its just like flipping a switch in your mind to change your mood. Then that wears off and you're just addicted

This is what I was looking for, that effects it has that make people pursue it. A calming effect would be a very good reinforcer.

Usually starts as a social thing, just like alcohol and narcotics. They your body gets used to the nicotine and you start needing that jolt to get going. Plus it stays a social activity as smoker tend to congregate. It has a positive effect on the brains pleasure centers to add to it.

My personal favorite was the morning coffee and a smoke or the weekend drink with a smoke. Both have a magnifying effect on the euphoria from smoking.

I quite cold turkey about 2 years ago which was fairly unpleasant. To add to the happiness of it I've learned one thing after 2 years. The only people who can truly say they quite are the dead ones. I still occasionally get the itch I know former smokers who still do 10, 20, or 30+ years later.

Now the upside. First I can run up 3 flights of stairs with bending over to breath. I can afford larger tanks, more games and more toys. Wife finally started wanting to kiss me and I haven't had a respiratory infection in 2 years.

A piece of advice I can give you is set a date. Smoke all you want till then but after that date follow the plan. Some can go cold turkey some need to cut back, some use gum, patch, inhaler. Once you have a set plan stick with it. Once you have stopped don't fall into the "Oh I can have just one" because you can't.

i started when i was 11, i stole my step-dad's cigarettes, and smoked em because "i could".
when i was 17 i found out i was pregnant, and quit.. for 5 years after having 2 babies, i went out with some girlfriends one night and got a little toasted and started smoking again, just like i had never quit.
fast forward 25 years, they doubled and in some cases tripled the taxes on cigarettes, $1 per pack turned into $4 per pack. so we started buying online from the NA websites. still paying $1 per pack, including shipping. we did this for several more years. then the states of CA and AZ said they can't ship their cigarettes here, so we got a friend in NM involved. and finally i said i had had enough. i'm NOT going to pay $4 per pack of cigarettes, and i'm not going to inconvenience my friends. i quit ordering cigarettes.

then 2 weeks later i went to the doctor because i'd had a cold and a bad cough for several months. they sent me for an x-ray and found a spot on my lung. I QUIT SMOKING THAT DAY (but i did finish the pack i had open.. lol). this was April 23, 2002. (i had smoked for 30 years total).

they sent me for several CT scans. but refused to biopsy whatever was in my lung because it was too small.
in 2007 i had a chest x-ray before surgery and asked specifically about the spot and they said they didn't see it. and last year i had another chest x-ray as followup and they couldn't find the spot.
