The pleco isn't getting its dietary needs met.

Does it have drift wood to chew on? Does it get any blood worms or other "meat based" foods. They are omnivores that lean heavy on the veggie side, but they do NEED some meat.


Some sinking omnivore wafers, sinking (or floating even for mine) cichlid pellets are needed in addition to the algae wafers, zuccini and assorted greens.


The pleco will kill the oscar eventually, if you don't meet its dietary needs.

this is typical behaviour of pelcos that are not having all the dietary needs met

they need VEGGIES (certain fruits are good too) cucumber, sqaush, pumpkin, zuchini, or lettuce are all great foods and should make up the bulk of thier diet with some meaty food thrown in every now and again to round it out

My pleco won't eat ANY veggies or fruits, nor does he touch the driftwood.

He gets fed Shrimp Pellets, Cichlid Pellets, and dried algae.

I even caught him eating a rosey red last night!

But uhm yeah... give him some more food. I find they eat constantly.

sometimes they take a bit to figure out veggies are food. meaty foods (pellets, dead rosie reds) have a much stronger smell to them and trigger a feeding response faster, or you may have one of the carnivorous types of plecos (zebra pleco's are an example)

I just have a regular common pooping machine.

The Rosey wasn't dead.. He had it pinned to the tank so it couldn't get away. Poor thing. That's a crappy way to die.

I used to put veggies in there ALL the time, and it never caught on... oh well.

try "stuffing" your veggies with some pellets,your plecos will quickly catch on. sorry to the op for the hijacking

Odd to have those two fish together. Roseys are a cold water fish (65 or lower) and plecos are tropical. If the pleco is being housed at a cold temperature perhaps that would help explain its dietary oddities? I am grasping at straws here, I am not sure if there could be a relationship between these two things or not.

No, the pleco is in with a pair of Jacks. The female Jack has eggs, and they will only eat live food at the moment. Don't worry... I QTed them.

The pleco has always been tropical, and has always had strange eating habits.
